Govt mulls reconstitution of J&K State Sports Council | CM likely to seek resignation of sitting members | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 14: Government is likely to dissolve existing J&K State Sports Council, the apex sports governing body of the state in the middle of its tenure and reconstitute the new dispensation soon. Sources in the Government divulge that a meeting of the existing Sports Council has been scheduled to be held in Srinagar on the 16th of June in the summer capital, wherein, the Chief Minister in his capacity as the president of the Council is likely to seek resignations from all the members to facilitate the process of its reconstitution. "The present Council is still left with more than a year in its four year term, but ever since the formation of new state Government, more than three months ago, there have been indications of reconstitution of the Council" disclosed a senior officer of the J&K State Sports Council. The move to reconstitute the Council has been initiated reportedly at the instance of the Chief Minister himself as he has expressed his displeasure over its functioning. After the last Secretary Sports Council was sacked and attached to the General Administration Department, lobbying had started for the post by several sitting members, but government had indicated its intentions to reconstitute the Council rather than making any stop gap arrangements. The State Sports Council has been victim of the apathetical attitude of successive Governments with Ministers incharge of sports expressing their reluctance in accepting the responsibility of the department and government appointing mostly those officers to the post of Secretary Sports Council who it wanted to reprimand for various reasons. Many officers with controversial backgrounds were appointed as secretaries of the council over more than a decade. These officers who had no know how of the sports completely jeopardized the process of sports development in the state besides ruining the representative character of the Council. It has been reliably learnt that hundreds of crorers of sports promotion grant offered to J&K by the Centre under various schemes has been squandered due to complete lack of vision and accountability of these officers. Besides, the three Ministers who manned the department of Youth Affairs and Sports during the previous NC-Congress regime including RS Chib, Taj Mohiuddin and Raman Bhalla exhibited little interest in the improvement of sports infrastructure and sports performance of the state's athletes. The present Council was constituted close to three years back, with then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as the president and then minister for sports RS Chib as vice president, but it is a pity that not a single meeting of the general body of the Council could be convened all this while, thus defeating the very purpose for which it was constituted and confining the decision making to the council secretariat only. Whether the new government includes genuine sports persons in the Council who can contribute in the sports administration with their experience and vision or the Council becomes a platform for rehabilitation of political workers and sycophants of the Ministers; would be interesting to see. |
