Deliberate police ‘inaction’ stuns Omar, spoils NC rally 6/14/2015 11:58:49 PM Early Times Report Srinagar, June 14: The former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah came out on the road to seek good governance and enforcement of the rights of the people. Omar, contrary to his expectations was not stopped by the police. The police watched with amusement when the workers lifted/removed the barricades near erstwhile Regal cinema on the one time posh Residency Road. Omar must have wondered to found that the lesson taught by successive NC regimes was forgotten by the police. No cane charge, no tear smoke shells and no use of the latest pallet guns. Political grapevine suggests that the `deliberate inaction' of the police forced Omar to change his programme. The plan of marching up to the civil secretariat was abandoned. Instead Omar did some politicking at Lal Chowk and the much hyped rally ended there. But why did Omar feel a need for good governance and enforcement of peoples' rights now, when he has been thrown out of power by the people of the state. When he was in power, good governance remained a distant dream. "Killings continued unabated, police stayed unaccountable and the election promises about unemployment and human rights remained unfulfilled," said apolitical analyst. According to him, nobody could have stopped Omar from giving a clean administration to the people of the state. "But, in his regime, the state won the dubious distinction of being the most corrupt state of India," he said. He said killings registered an alarming increase in his (Omar's) regime. "He brazenly admitted that the disturbed state would retain AFSPA as long as it was needed," he said. Without painting a rosy picture of the current regime, it has to be admitted that a strong message has been conveyed to the men in uniform. The arrest of two policemen for their alleged involvement in the Narbal killing last month reflects the intentions of the incumbent Chief Minister.
