Police reviewing security of protected persons, Agencies clueless about assailants | After civilians gunmen can target politicians | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 14: Unidentified gunmen targeting civilians in north Kashmir's Sopore area have thrown up another challenge for the security agencies operating in Kashmir. People at the helm fear the gunmen may intensify their activities in coming days, and they may target politicians. Sources told Early Times that agencies are reviewing the security of all the protected persons and have informed them not to venture into areas which are considered to be "red zones." "Along with Jammu and Kashmir Armed Personnel (JKAP) paramilitary CRPF men are being deployed to guard the people who could be the possible targets of the gunmen in coming days," sources added. They said that threat perception has increased as militants have changed their strategy. "The gunmen have been directed by their bosses sitting across the Line of Control (LoC) to keep the pot boiling so that they don't lose further grip over the situation. Sources said that most ministers have been asked by the Police to wear bullet proof jackets and use bullet proof cars while travelling. "Politicians have been told not to hold rallies and public gatherings till the gunmen behind the attacks on civilians are identified and arrested," said a source. He said security agencies recently turned down the request of a PDP leader to hold a rally in Pattan area and advised him to wait till the situation becomes conducive. "We are sure that the killings of civilians are being carried out by the militants and they are trying to shift the blame on the security forces. The group which is involved in attacks on mobile towers and recent civilian killings is a fringe group which is being handled directly from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK)," said a police official. He said that security agencies are investigating the recent killings of a Hurriyat (G) activist Sheikh Altaf and another civilian Khursheed Ahmad Bhat. "Militants have realized that they cannot take on the security forces and if they try to do so they would get killed in return. They are attacking soft targets to ensure that situation remains tense and they establish their writ,"the official said. He claimed that security agencies have got strong inputs about these gunmen to make it big in coming days may attack the politicians, including separatists. "We have issued an advisory in this regard and have told the politicians to be careful and not to move around without proper security," the police official added. In an emergency meeting of Core Group Kashmir (CGK), the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Srinagar based XV Corps Lt Gen Subarata Saha and the Director General of Police K Rajendra sought feedback from the officials of the various agencies and stressed upon them that they should leave no stone unturned to trace the gunmen behind attacks on cellular towers in Kashmir and attacks on civilians in Sopore area. Sources said that officials informed the GOC and the DGP that so far they have not got any definite leads about the group but one thing is for sure that it's a fringe group of militants which is on a mission to create disturbance and confusion in Kashmir. "The officials assured the CGK the people behind these acts would be nabbed soon and separatists won't be allowed to encash the situation," sources said, adding, "The CGK was informed that security of the protected persons is being reviewed and all the possible efforts are being put to ensure that gunmen don't strike in a big way in any part of Kashmir." |
