Yatra security on top of Govt priority list | High level meeting in New Delhi on Jun 16 | | Sanjay Pathak/ Kunal Shrivatsa Early Times Report JAMMU, June 14: With threats of a terror attack on the ensuing Amarnath Yatra looming large, the central government is taking no chance in ensuring smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage as it has geared up its security mechanism to scuttle nefarious designs of different terrorist groups. The Union Ministry for Home Affairs (MHA), which is playing a pro-active role in plugging loopholes, if any, in the security apparatus has convened a series of meetings with different security agencies in the recent past for better coordination among them while looking after the security for the Amarnath yatra which is beginning from July 2 for 59 days. Highly placed sources in J&K Police informed Early Times that the Union Government wants to plug in all loopholes with regard to security for Amarnath yatra for which the high officials of the Union Home Ministry are in regular touch with the state government machinery. Sources further said that after holding series of meetings to review yatra security, one such similar high level meeting with the top officials of the security agencies is going to be held under the chairmanship of Union Home Secretary at New Delhi on June 16 wherein the Director General of Police (DGP), J&K Police, K Rajendra is also scheduled to participate. "As the Amarnath Yatra security is high on agenda of the Central Government, the Union Home Secretary has convened a high level meeting to access the security set up for Amarnath yatra…The DGP K Rajendra has been asked to ensure his presence for the meeting of an urgent nature," said sources. "The DGP will attend the meeting to be held at New Delhi wherein detailed deliberations on taking effective security measures for the smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra will once more be held… The meeting would lay stress on enforcing high alert security in sensitive areas enroute Amarnath cave shrine," they added. It is pertinent to mention here that ahead of annual Amarnath Yatra, the Union Home Minister Raj Nath Singh chaired a high level meeting with the top officials of the security agencies on June 10 at New Delhi. Besides, top officers from the Army, the senior officials of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and other senior officers of intelligence agencies attended the meeting. During the meeting, the Home Minister stressed on the need for close and better coordination among all sister security agencies and the civil administration. "To foil any attempt by troublemakers to disrupt peaceful atmosphere, close liaison should be maintained at every level and the officers supervising different components should be briefed accordingly," Raj Nath said. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has agreed to provide additional Central Armed Police Forces to Jammu and Kashmir for making elaborate security arrangements for annual Amarnath pilgrimage. |
