Budgami keeps Azadi, mainstream camps happy, gets bulletproof vehicle | Thaali Ka Baingan! | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 14: Being ridiculed as 'Thaali Ka Baingan' could be humiliating but in Kashmir such a strategy brings blessings for politicians who can keep both mainstream and separatist camps happy. For separatist leader Agha Syed Hassan Budgami, who recently quit one Hurriyat to please the other and has equally improved his relations with a mainstream party, the strategy has worked wonders for him: State government has blessed him with a bulletproof vehicle. Budgami who for the past few weeks has been seen rubbing shoulders with Mirwaiz's arch rival Syed Ali Geelani, has been blessed with the bulletproof for personal travel while his police escort has also been upgraded. The new vehicle is equipped with sophisticated bulletproof system and wireless communication gadgets. "A specially trained driver and wireless operator are with the sedan," said a source adding "this has added to the police protection which this family has already been enjoying for years." Ironically, Budgami is believed to have travelled in the government-sponsored vehicle even to attend anti-national meetings including those hosted by Geelani at his Hyderpora residence. Amid changing political situation in Kashmir, Budgami seems to be trying to keep both the separatist and the mainstream camps happy. On one hand after quitting from Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Agha, he is trying to keep Geelani in good humor while on the other hand he is seen moving around with leaders from a mainstream party, which is a key ally to the coalition. As already reported by Early Times, he is all set to join one. If family insiders are to be believed it was Budgami's growing proximity with the mainstream party that the government decided to "gift the bulletproof to them". On June 10, the Mirwaiz faction suffered a major jolt when Agha Syed Hassan Budgami quit the amalgam. Accusing the Hurriyat (M) of failing to evolve a long-term strategy, Budgami said "due to non-serious approach adopted by the Hurriyat (M) in the past, the opponents got a chance to point fingers and castigate the forum that claims to be the representative of peoples' aspirations." While Budgami pledged not to take part in any of the conglomerate's function, meeting or an event, the Hurriyat (M) on June 13 formally expelled him from the party. Now both the groups have started washing dirty linen in public. A Hurriyat (M) member alleged that Budgami was under party scanner since last year Assembly elections when his son Mujtaba and other family members were seen campaigning for a mainstream party. Budgami on the other hand hinted that Mirwaiz led Hurriyat is no more in the good book of Pakistan. On May 31, Agha is understood to have reposed faith in Geelani when the former visited his residence for an interaction, which lasted for over three hours. Meanwhile a police official said the bulletproof vehicle has been given to Budgami by a Minister. "Formal allotment of the vehicle is yet to be done," he said adding the facility can be revoked anytime. |
