Militants strike again in Sopore, kill their former colleague | | | S Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, June 14: Mystery behind the civilian killings in Sopore town in this North Kashmir district continues as unknown gunmen killed yet another civilian in the Badami Bagh area on Sunday morning. Meanwhile, Baramulla district observed shutdown on the call of chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani. This is the fifth civilian killing in the volatile area since the last week of May and the security agencies are clueless, that what is actually going on. Unidentified gunmen struck again on the early morning of Sunday and shot dead a civilian from point blank range. Sources said that unidentified gunmen killed a civilian Mehraj-ud Din Dar (42) son of Mohammad Ahsann Dar, resident of Badami Bagh area of Sopore town early in the morning. Dar was opening his poultry shop outside his house when militants fired two shots from a point blank range and killed him on spot. Dar was moved to the nearby SDH Sopore where doctors declared him brought dead, said sources. It is learnt that Dar was a former militant of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). Five people were killed in less than three weeks. These killings have spread fear in the whole Sopore town, while police seems clueless about the killers. A senior police official said that, unidentified gunmen killed Mehraj Dar from a point blank range adding that they are ascertaining the facts as why Dar was killed. Trouble started when on May 21, (Lashkar-e Islam) militant outfit had warned the proprietors of Mobile towers to shut their business otherwise they will destroy the (Towers) by blasting. During the intervening night of May 23 and 24 unidentified persons lobbed twin grenades towards Airtel mobile communication tower in Kralteng area of Sopore town, among which one grenade exploded in the air and another was defused by the Bomb Disposal Squard which had created panic among the people. However on May 24, unidentified gunmen opened fire at a BSNL outlet in Iqbal Market of Sopore town and injured three people on the spot after which one employee of BSNL Mohammad Rafiq, 26 of Handwara succumbed to his injuries at the Srinagar's SMHS hospital. On late evening of May 25, three unidentified gunmen barged into the house of an Ex Militant of (HM) militant outfit Ghulam Hassan Dar 65, S/O Khaliq Dar R/O Dooru and shot him dead. While as on June 9, unidentified gunmen killed an employee of health department Altaf Rehman Sheikh 45, Son of Mohammad Yousf Sheikh of New Colony Sopore. Sheikh was an activist of Hurriyat Conference (G). On June 12, A Shopkeeper, Trade Federation Leader Khursheed Ahmad Bhat S/O Ghulam Nabi Bhat R/O Bomai Sopore was shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside his residence. It is pertinent to mention here that the killing started when a high tech communication device installed by militants to avoid their detection by Security Agencies on the top of a mobile tower went missing. |
