Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 14: Hoping against hope, the members of OBC community continue their struggle for grant of 27 percent reservations as per the Mandal Commission recommendations in the State and as per the directives of Apex Court.
Though the community constitutes a sizeable number of State's population but it has been deprived of the benefit of Mandal Commission recommendations which were implemented in rest of the country in 1990 during the VP Singh government by the State Government on the pretext of Article 370 granting special status to the State.
Since then the embers of the community are on streets seeking justice for their cause. Even they took the matter to court of law which also gave directives to the State Government asking it to strictly adhere to recommendations of Mandal Commission so far as the grant of reservations is concerned. The dharnas, protests and strikes of these people have not borne fruit as the successive State governments were unmoved and they did not bother to give benefit of the reservations to these hapless people.
The All India Backward Classes Union spearheading the struggle for the rights of the OBCs in the State and which has launched a movement to get the Mandal Commission recommendations implemented in the State today also staged a demonstration in front of Press Club here demanding immediate implementation of Mandal Commission recommendations and justice to the people belonging to OBC community in the State.
Deprived of their rights by successive State governments the members of the OBC community as well as leaders of AIBCU had pinned high hopes in present coalition that it will implement the recommendations which were in limbo for last 26 years due to indifferent attitude of the successive governments. But the community feels now dejected as present State Government also seems non serious towards implementation of the recommendations.
The AIBCU representatives have submitted memoranda to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union ministers, Chief Minister and other who mean in the government seeking justice for them but to no avail, said Abdul Majid Malik president of the Association.
He said the organization will continue the ongoing struggle and take it to logical conclusion. All the political parties talking of the welfare of the down-trodden and suppressed sections of the society have been exposed with their stand on this genuine issue. Malik appealed his community members to be ready for a long drawn battle for the rights as they have no hope from present government as well.
Prof Kali Dass another senior leader of the organization said J&K is the only State in the country which deprived the OBCs of their rights by taking the undue advantage of special status granted to J&K under Article 370.
He said BJP has no social justice policy in its agenda and its claims of good governance are totally hollow. He demanded 27 percent reservations for OBC as per Mandal Commission recommendations, increase in creamy layer from 4.5 lakh to six lakh, renewal of OBC certificates on the basis of income certificates etc.
