India need not rush to conclusions while getting slight positive signals from Pakistan | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 11: Well, India has the habit of rushing to the conclusions. The habit of reacting to a situation or to a development or haste in coming to some definite conclusions is not new for India. In fact if India has raised certain national and international controversies it is the result of its speed in rushing to some conclusions or its haste in reacting to a development when it could have maintained its reticence. And the latest incident indicating that New Delhi or the ruling party in India has the habit of rushing to conclusions pertains to the one-hour long meeting between Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and his Pakistani counterpart,Nawaz Sharif,on the sidelines of the SCO in Russia. Soon after the meeting end the BJP on termed the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif a "breakthrough". The BJP said the talks were a success because "Pakistan has accepted our definition of terrorism".Indo-Pak joint statement a sign of positive movement. The engagement at different levels will hopefully open new possibilities, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said. "The meeting was a breakthrough, the reason for this is very clear as for the first time Pakistan has accepted our definition of terrorism," according to the BJP. In a breakthrough, India and Pakistan have decided to revive the stalled dialogue process and find ways to expedite trial of the Mumbai attack case as Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif agreed to cooperate to eliminate terrorism from South Asia.Is it a brfeakthrough ? Has such a breakthrough never materialised in the past ?And despite the fact that human memory is short but people do remember that Islamabad or the successive Prime Ministers in Pakistan have never opposed holding of talks for resolving various bilateral problems. During the last several years, especially during the last one year, Islamabad has been making repeated pleas for the resumption of talks. If on one hand it pleads for the resumption of talks,on the other it continued to support terror in all its manifestations. Its pleas for resumoption of bilateral process of dialogvue is immediately followed or preceded by series of ceasefire violations on the LOC and on the IB in Jammu and Kashmir. Modi and Sharif, in their first bilateral talks in over an year, met for nearly one hour on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and discussed entire gamut of issues between the two countries. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and his Pakistani counterpart Sartaj Aziz will meet in New Delhi to discuss all issues connected to terrorism, the statement said. "For the first time Pakistan has accepted to combat terrorism in 'all its forms'," he said, while pointing out that Pakistan had, for long, tried to play a nuanced game on this subject by trying to differentiate between good terrorism and bad terrorism; for India terrorism was always an unmitigated evil. Soon after the 2008 Mumbai carnage Pakistan had sought documentary evidence from New Delhi which had concluded that terrorists had come from Pakistan and were guided by Hafiz Saeed and Lakhvi.New Delhi furnished various documents establishing the involvement of Lakhvi and Saeed.Has Islamabad taken any action against Saeed and Lakhvi ? No it has not and Lakhvi had been released by the court and Islamabad did not feel it right to file a petition in the supreme court challenging the release order serviced by the lower court. Saeed has been allowed to roam freely in Pakistan and he has received support and encouragement from the establishment in Islamabad for launching anti-India campaign.Does this call for rejoicing in New Delhi over Modi's meeting with Sharif ? Does this warrant India rushing to conclusions as if it has won the first round of war against terror ? Certainly not because it may be unwise on the part of New Delhi to repose trust, complete trust,in Islamabad because despite civilian regime it is the Army and the ISI that call the shots in Pakistan. |
