Early Times Report
Kulgam, July 11: Angry protesters in Bugam village of Kulgam district on Saturday attacked PDP Rajya Sabha MP Nazir Ahmad Laway and torched two vehicles of the party workers who were accompanying him.
Eyewitness said that at around 1.15 pm, Laway along with Chief Education Officer Kulgam, party leaders and other officials arrived in village to take part in an official function being organised in a higher secondary school. However, on his arrival, residents got angry and attacked him.
They said that as soon as the MP entered the school premises, the residents gathered outside and made him hostage.
“Till one hour we were made hostage. Residents attacked with stones and bricks but later police came to our rescue and resorted to aerial firing and teargas shelling during which we managed to escape from the village,” senior PDP worker Firdous Ahmad Koul, who was accompanying the Rajya Sabha MP, told Early Times.
He said the MP was scheduled to donate a computer lab to the school. “No anti-Islamic or anti-Kashmir function was being held in the school, he was there to donate a computer lab and was interested to know the necessary requirements of the school,” he added.
Eyewitness said that angry protesters mostly having allegiance with separatists torched two vehicles of the MP’s cavalcade. “Vehicles were of our senior party workers who left them in the village after the clashes,” Firdous confirmed.
A Balero jeep (JKO2BE/1829) of Mubarak Ahmad of Bugam Kulgam and Santro car of Touseef Ahmad resident of Tarigam Kulgam were torched by the mob, police sources said.
Sources said that angry mob also damaged infrastructure of the school and put on fire the precious school record.
Meanwhile, police have registered an FIR and detained four miscreants including the alleged kingpin who provoked youth to violence.
“We have restored the normalcy to the village and arrested four including kingpin Mohammad Shafi Wani of the same village,” SP Kulgam Mohammad Mumtaz told Early Times and said that investigating into the case was going on.
Earlier, during elections, CPI(M)’s state general secretary and MLA Kulgam M Y Tarigami also attacked by the mob. During the last assembly elections, out of 800 registered voters, no one had turned up to exercise his franchise.
