Early Times Report

Jammu, July 11: Though Right to Education is a fundamental right of every Indian citizen, the Principal of Moulana Azad Memorial College Jammu has virtually turned into a dictator and has been openly denying admission to the students, with break in their academic career.
Surprisingly, two prestigious colleges of Jammu MAM College and GGM Science College have different admission rules for students with break in academic career.
As per the admission rules for undergraduate courses in MAM College, uploaded on the official website of MAM College, in the 4th column reads as, "A student with break in academic career will not be considered for admission in the college. However the Principal may condone, one year's break; in case of students where he/she feels convenience about the reasons leading to the break in studies.".
Surprisingly, the admission rules uploaded on the official website of GGM Science College reads as, "A student with a break in academic career up-to one year will be considered for admission in the college subject to availability of seats."
It is also very much disturbing to notice that Principal's of colleges have been turning into dictators as they are given powers to cancel any admission and student has not right to get reasons for same.
In the website of both colleges, it is also written as, "The Principal reserves the right to accept or reject any application deemed not fit for admission without assigning any reason". "Is it a democracy or Dictatorship, where a student cannot ask for reasons, for rejection of any application. Such steps are not favourable for a largest democracy of world", a retired professor said.
He further said that the unbridled powers of Principal, especially MAM College Principal, much be checked, so that there would be no violation of fundamental right. "After securing 61.5 percent marks in Arts stream, I had applied in MAM College for admission in Arts stream and my name also appeared in the merit list, but I was shocked when I was denied admission, on pretext of two years' break", a student Arshad Mehmood said.
He further said that due to weak economical condition, he had not been able to take admission in last two years. "Is it a crime for being a poor?", he questioned and appealed Education Minister to give instructions to Principal for allowing to take admission.
GGM Science College Principal Satinder Singh said that there was no such rule of denying admission to students with break of one year and if student was in merit list, he must be allowed. "Due to limited intake capacity, sometimes, we deny admission to students with break, but there is no such rule", he said.
MAM College Principal picked up her official phone 94191-39015, but said that it was wrong number.
