Separatists surrender ‘hartal strategy’ in Kashmir | No strike after 25 yrs | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, Jul 11 : For the first time since the onset of militancy in Kashmir, the separatists have not issued a strike call on July 13 this year, giving a clear indication of bidding adieu to the hartal trends in the valley. The separatists including Huriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik have asked people to do their routine work on July 13 this year. Same has given a serious hint towards a bend in the separatist stand in Kashmir, making people to think that what has changed all of a sudden after the long spell of 25 years that hartals would no longer be observed in the valley. Experts are of the opinion that the separatist leadership has now understood the repercussions of the strike calls issued by them in the past. The calls were taken with a non-serious note by the people of Kashmir or used to be observed in isolated pockets. Now when the things have started changing drastically here, the change in program seemed to be an inevitable entity for the separatist leaders. Sources said that series of meetings were held by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq- chairman of Huriyat's moderate faction about the reasons behind hartals loosing sheen in Kashmir. He, as per sources, has clearly informed all the constituents of his amalgam of not issuing unnecessary strike calls as these are no more accepted by the masses. Now when it comes to July 13, which apart from being a government holiday is known in Kashmir valley as a day when strike is witnessed, separatists have taken everyone by surprise while asking people to perform their routine work. The reason given for not issuing a strike call was that due to the ongoing month of Ramazan, people must not suffer. The claim is only contradicting the separatist stand as they in the past for the several times have issued bandhs during Ramazan. Even recently Mirwaiz Umar issued a strike call May 30 in Srinagar with Geelani and Malik supporting it. As the strike call didn't generate any response other than downtown areas, again the discussion came to fore that if the hartals be a future strategy for the separatists or not. Meanwhile, when it has been decided not to observe hartals any more, experts believe that things would move to normalcy gradually, if not all of a sudden. Furthermore, separatists have also started giving wide berth to the stone pelting incidents, asking people to refrain from the acts of violence. Mirwaiz Umar Fraooq during his previous Friday sermon in Kashmir's grand mosque asked youth not to indulge in the acts of stone pelting and follow the programs of the separatists, if given. Changing strategies of separatists in Kashmir have also started changing winds in Kashmir, the government has starting hoping for a good tourist season this year. " If there would be no hartals, there would be no stone pelting incidents. Same would provide government a chance to perform on ground and lure tourists to visit Valley," one of the senior ministers of the coalition, wishing not to be named, said.
