Police deployed for traffic management, not yatris' security | | | Shiv Dev Thakur Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 14: Even as the annual Amarnath Yatra is underway amid threat of militant attacks, the police instead of keeping a strict vigil in the state has shifted its focus to a job which they are not supposed to perform. The executive wing of police is busy these days in nabbing traffic offenders. The men in khaki who are responsible for maintaining law and order are busy in checking the helmets and papers of the people. The cops are seen carrying challan books, seizing vehicles and checking the papers of the vehicles rather than checking the vehicles for arms and ammunition. "No vehicle or the travellers are frisked either in Jammu city or along the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Instead, the papers of the vehicles are checked almost everywhere," sources told Early Times. A pilgrim travelling to Amarnath while sharing his views said, "We were stopped many times while travelling to Shri Amarnath ji, but the cops did not check our vehicle and only asked for papers of the vehicle". When contacted, senior police officials said they are keeping an eye over "each and every suspect". They said that security has been tightened in entire state and the executive wing of police is working efficiently in its field. "The cops are checking papers of the vehicles to ensure that the vehicle has not been stolen to carry out anti-national activities from it," a police officer said. |
