Early Times Report
Anantnag, July 14: Taking cognizance of an Early Times report, a joint team of Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) and Wildlife Department demolished a restaurant raised illegally by an influential doctor in Pahalgam tourist restort.
On June 11, this newspaper carried a report titled 'Influential doc raises restaurant in Pahalgam's wildlife zone', highlighting how rich and influential continue to plunder the fragile environs of Pahalgam.
In brazen violation of the Wildlife Act and High Court directive banning any construction within the jurisdiction of PDA, Dr Ehsan had constructed a restaurant during when state was witnessing elections last year.
However, after the Early Times report, embarrassed officials in the PDA and Wildlife Department today bulldozed the structure.
"The structure was raised illegally by the owner. Besides he failed to produce requisite documents after which a team of PDA and Wildlife Department demolished the structure," chief Wildlife warden, Anantnag, Mohammad Maqbool Baba, who supervised the demolition drive told Early Times.
A senior official in the PDA also confirmed that Dr Ehsan hadn't any permission to raise the restaurant.
"The structure was raised illegally. PDA hasn't given him any NOC or permission for raising the structure," he said.
"He (Dr Ehsan) was given enough time but he failed to produce the required documents," he added.
Dr Ehsan had earlier claimed that he had obtained permission and NOC from both the departments.
Meanwhile, local residents, particularly social and environmental activists, have expressed satisfaction over the action of PDA and Wildlife Department.
"The way they took cognizance of Early Times report and demolished the structure is satisfactory, but the same law and yardstick should be applied to others who have raised structures in violation of High Court directive and have grabbed land in forests and wildlife area," local activist Mushtaq Pahalgami said.
