Second list ready, officials owning benami properties in dock | War against corruption gains momentum | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 14: The Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has asked the panel headed by the Chief Secretary Mohammad Iqbal Khandey to expedite the process of finalizing the second list of the corrupt officials without any further delay. Sources told Early Times the Chief Minister has expressed dismay over officials taking time to finalize the second list. "The investigating agencies had prepared the list of at least 160 corrupt officials out of which 63 were shown the exit door recently. The list of 50 other corrupt officials has almost been finalized and the investigating agencies believe that the cases against the officials are water tight," sources added. They said the second list of the corrupt officials, includes the names of a few top and renowned officials, and once it's out it would definitely shake the administration. "The Chief Minister is very keen on ensuring that action is taken against the big wigs so that a strong message is sent that corruption won't be tolerated," sources added. They said that a few people pointing fingers at government acting against only a few officials and critics terming it as an eye wash has not gone well with the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who is spearheading the war against corruption. "A few BJP ministers are reportedly using their influence to shield some officials, who are close to them and are trying their best to ensure that the names of their close aides are dropped from the list," said a source. He said interference of the BJP ministers has come into the notice of the Chief Minister and he has expressed dismay over it. "The investigating agencies have been asked to ensure that secrecy of the list is maintained so that no one tries to use his influence to prevent government from acting against corrupt elements," the source added. He said the panel headed by the Chief Secretary is all set to meet after Eid-ul-Fitr in Srinagar to examine the corruption cases individually. "The high-level panel would take the feedback from the investigating agencies before giving its final nod to act against at least 50 officials, which include top officials." Sources said that this time around the list prepared by the SVO includes the names of a few police officials, who have allegedly amassed huge wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income and axe is likely to fall on them. "Most officials have invested the money which they have earned by misusing their official position in land. Many officials have purchased benami properties," they added. Pertinently, since the day Mufti has taken over the reins of the state he has expressed keenness to clean the administration and has been personally monitoring the developments. The State Vigilance Organization (SVO) had submitted a list of 162 tainted officials to the government. On July 1, the government terminated the services of 63 officials of whom 25 were allegedly caught red-handed by the SVO while accepting bribe. Officers who were terminated recently include five Kashmir Administrative Officers, two Chief Engineers, three doctors, officials from the School Education, Revenue, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Finance, Public Health Engineering, Home, Power, Roads and Buildings, Forest, Rural Development, Housing and Urban Development, Transport, Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation and Labour and Employment departments. The Transport minister Abdul Gani Kohli while talking to a local news agency said: "We will not tolerate the officials whose integrity is doubtful but at the same time government has also taken a decision that that upright officers will be given important assignments involving public dealing."
