As divided separatists may fall hence intensify unity bid | | | The way the separatists in Kashmir have joined hands, after resolving to end their bickerings, does indicate that the seem to be serious about the unity process. After eight years of separation, the leaders of the two factions of Hurriyat Conference and the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front together have decided to close their ranks. This is yet another development after India and Pakistan agreed to resume the stalled process of dialogue. It seems that the separatists were motivated by one consideration. When India and Pakistan, two arch rivals, can agree to resume talks why should not the separatists resolve their minor differences and decide to unite. This time the beginning was made by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads a conglomerate of hardliners and whose policies had actually caused rupture in the All party Hurriyat Conference. On July 11, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, a hard-line separatist leader, hosted an Iftar party at his residence in Srinagar, in which the estranged leaders from various parties broke the fast together. It seems that Molvi Umar Farooq, chairman of the All Party Hurriyat Conference, which is considered as an amalgam of moderates, utilised the invitation from Geelani to break the fast together for promoting unity. In the recent past, he has faced situations in which he felt Geelani was stepping onto his turf, which is Jamia Masjid, a grand mosque in the heart of Srinagar, where he has been delivering Friday sermons since 1990. The Mirwaiz's supporters would keep a close watch in his rallies, making sure no one chanted pro-Geelani slogans. Yes,in 2008 agitation against transfer of land to Amarnath Shrine Board for setting up facilities for the pilgrims at and around Baltal separatists had united while protesting against the land transfer. It was as a result of their protest rallies that the land transfer deal was first cancelled but when it evoked strong resentment in Jammu and had the potential of escalating communal trouble in rest of the country the land transfer was restored. But in unity the separatists were able to demonstrate their strength and relevance.Over the years these separatists have started nursing a feeling that they have been sidelined by the Government of India because since 2006 the stalled talks have not been resumed between New Delhi and the separatists. Though the Congress led UPA Government did not say anything about its inability to resume talks with separatists, the BJP led NDA Government under Narendra Modi has made it clear that as as long the separatists continue to display their pro-Pakistan sentiments New Delhi would not resume talks with them. Hence the separatists feel that as a divided house New Delhi went on sidelining and ignoring them.Another reason that brought these separatists on one platform was their belief that so long they failed to unite both India and Pakistan may not feel the need for involving them in the triangular talks. Now that these separatists believe that talks between New Delhi and Islamabad were to begin shortly it was time for them(separatists) to unite so that they could demand their involvement in the talks from a place of strength. The unity process may prove a temporary affair because these separatists continue to be plagued by inherent political and ideological conflict. While Geelani is in favour of Kashmir’s incorporation with Pakistan, the JKLF Chief, Mohd.Yasin Malik supports "Azadi" for the two Kashmirs from Pakistan and from India.Molvi Umar prefers to leave it to people to decide their future.Still these separatists have voted for a truce so that their voice could become louder and was heard by New Delhi and Islamabad. As united they believe that they would not be sidelined or taken for granted. But all depends on people of Kashmir. If they support these separatists Geelani, Malik, Molvi Umar and others may have a new lease of life.If people stop supporting them and favour development these separatists may emerge as paper tigers. |
