Month long promotional Rural Tourism campaign culminates in TosaMaidan belt | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 14: TosaMaidan Bachav Front, School for Rural Development and Environment & Initiative for Development Alternatives, organized a month long promotional campaign of Rural Tourism in the whole belt of Tosa Maidan. The activities conducted involved small meetings in almost every village and major four awareness programs at Zugoo-Aarizal, Sethaharan, Drung and Shunglipora. Dr Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Chief Patron TosaMaidan Bachav Front and Chairman J&K Right to Information Movement said the month long campaign not only helped in sensitizing the locales but the campaign initiatives demonstrated practical ways to add value to the whole concept of Rural tourism as well. "The promotional campaign was need of the hour. In order to successfully launch and implement the program of Rural Tourism, the local communities need to understand the basics, and then only they could be involved in the promotion and development of rural tourism viz. revival of traditional art and craft, development of products, hygiene and basic sanitation, formal education, skill-development, training and capacity building etc," said Dr. Ghulam Rasool. He said that developing rural tourism in the small villages holds the promise of higher incomes, more jobs and greater diversification of rural economy that is mainly dependent on agriculture. He added that rural tourism model will be based on sustainable practices that will seek to provide equitable economic benefits, conserve the natural heritage, respect socio- cultural traditions, and provide a meaningful experience for tourists. "The promotional campaign served as catalysts for revitalizing local communities and explaining sustainable development models that could be replicated on a wider scale. TosaMaidan is of paramount potential to implement the model of adventure related activities like trekking, water-sports, rock-climbing and winter sports etc. Future efforts will be to amalgamate TosaMaidan activities with local communities," said Dr. Ghulam Rasool. He said the issues that were put forth in the concluding session of the promotional campaign are compensation to be paid to the kith and kin of the people who died and those who are handicapped, disabled or left impaired on the explosion of unexploded shells, when the Tosa Maidan land was being used as a firing range and road connectivity of Tosa Maidan with Srinagar. Hence, it becomes responsibility of the Government to declare TosaMaidan as independent Rural Tourist destination. |
