Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 8: Named after the legendary ruler of the state and dedicated to public with great pomp and show by the former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Maharaja Hari Singh Park on the banks of river Tawi has turned out to be a blot on the face of the city of temples rather than augmenting its beauty.
The neglect and apathy that has been meted out to this park by the administration and more particularly by the JDA has not only left the very face of Jammu scarred, but also disgraced the name of Maharaja Hari Singh which is adored and revered by millions of people across the region.
"Besides giving facelift to the city, the park was constructed with the objective of checking encroachment in the bed of Tawi that had continued unabated upstream" divulged a former senior officer of the JDA. He disclosed that in order to develop a state-of-the-art park, it was proposed to auction the land for the construction of a 5-star hotel and develop the park on the remaining chunk of land utilizing the funds raised from the auction. "Though the auction was successfully completed, the move was opposed by several social and political organizations who resented the auction of a piece of land that was named after the Maharaja. The JDA buckled under pressure and taking cognizance of the public sentiment, the then Minister for Urban Development ordered cancellation of the auction" he informed, adding that since then, neither the JDA, nor the ministry has taken any initiative to develop the park.
The park has in the meanwhile become a centre of illegal and immoral activities with gamblers, drunkards and others frequenting the place throughout the day and night. The encroachers are also at work at one end of the park, discreetly usurping the prime land. Besides apathy of the JDA, PWD has also added to its degradation by turning one tube of the road joining Gujjar Nagar to Dogra chowk into a garbage dump. Mubarak Singh, VC JDA when contacted said that the place is to be developed as park only and JDA has given an affidavit in the court to this effect. "A park shall be constructed here in phased manner and we are actively working on a detailed proposal" the VC averred.
Repeated attempts to contact MLA east Rajesh Gupta failed as his cellphone was persistently switched off.
