Edu Minister's worries multiply as GoI chokes funding | JK students score lowest rank in India | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 8: There is more bad news for Education Minister Naeem Akhter. Students from J&K have failed to perform at the nation level, according to a recent survey. Amid the stubbornness of the Education Minister to pacify the aggrieved ReT teachers in the state who accuse the minister of disgracing their services by announcing the screening test to judge their abilities, the survey conducted by the Ministry for Human Resources and Development reveal how much chaotic is state's education sector at present. The survey reveals that students hailing from J&K have the poorest reading comprehension at an all India level event and hence scored lowest in entire India. "Students of Jammu and Kashmir scored lowest average score (217) in reading comprehension while Kerala topped the list," declares the MHRD's annual report. Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. An individual's ability to comprehend text is influenced by their traits and skills, one of which is the ability to make inferences. If word recognition is difficult, students use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words, which interferes with their ability to comprehend what is read. Now when war of words is going on between the Education Minister and the agitated ReT teachers who accuse the former of high handedness, the students continue to suffer at large. "It is the ego of the minister which is not allowing him to pacify the ReT teachers. He has nothing at stake, he has never even won an election but his actions are indeed proving counterproductive for the entire ruling camp," said a PDP activist. Meanwhile, at a time when the Education Minister has sparked the controversy, leaving the schools shut and students in lurch, the poor performance of his administration has compelled the MHRD to choke all funds meant for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools in J&K. The MHRD has cited poor performance of J&K schools in meeting the annual targets. There are also reports that the MHRD has stopped funds that were meant to pay the rent of the SSA schools. Due to the poor performance of the J&K government, the rent which earlier was paid as Rs 2000 per school, per month from central government has been stopped. "Education Minister could have ordered the screening test later. There are other pending projects that need to be taken up for execution. We really wonder why such an unnecessary move had to be initiated at this time," an official of the Education Department said. |
