BJP paying price of unpopularity in Jammu | Dhanyavaad Rally Or Police Rally | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 8: The immediate fallout of the August 5 decision of the AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC), which is spearheading movement for the setting up of AIIMS in Jammu, to call off six-day-long bandh, was the decision of the denounced and condemned BJP leadership to take out what it called "Dhanyavaad Rally" (thanksgiving rally) on August 7. It was the same BJP whose ministers, MLAs and small time leaders were at the receiving end with people, cutting across party lines, ridiculing them and terming them "anti-Jammu", "Valley-centric", "ungrateful", "mischievous", "unscrupulous", "cheaters", "bluffers", "power hungry" and what not. So much so, the people confronted them at several places and refused to open their shops when asked by some BJP ministers, MLAs and small time leaders. The point is that till August 5 no BJP minister, no BJP MLA and no BJP leader could dare to come out of his/her house without a foolproof security cover. They were so mortally afraid of the badly let down and humiliated people of Jammu. In between, the BJP and the authorities tried their level best to break the ACC and scuttle the massive bandh but with no success. Such was the determination of the people and unity among the ACC constituents. The BJP not only decided to take out thanksgiving rally in Jammu city to give credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but had on August 5 and 6 put up huge hoardings at different spots in Jammu city, which said "BJP is grateful to Modi for sanctioning an AIIMS for Jammu also". The BJP took the decision to take out thanksgiving rally despite the fact that there was no formal order on the subject. Even today, there is no order to the effect that an AIIMS will be established in Jammu. There is only one letter from the Government of India to the Government of Jammu & Kashmir asking the latter to identify "alternate pieces of land in both Jammu and Srinagar". Underline the words "AIIMS for Jammu also" because these words indicate the place of Jammu province, which voted for the BJP, and Kashmir Valley, which rejected it with contempt on the ground that it was communal, have in the BJP's political scheme of the things. These words also established that the priority of the BJP is the restive and threatening Kashmir and not the nationalist and backbone-of-the-nation, Jammu region. There was nothing for the BJP to celebrate about after the ACC called of bandh, but it did celebrate what it called its victory and vindication of its stand that it was committed to bringing an AIIMS for Jammu. Did the people participate in this rally or in this exercise of self-deception? They didn't. Only a handful of BJP workers and a couple of ministers and local MLAs were there in what could be termed as a flop show. Actually, it would be a misnomer to call what the BJP did on Friday a "Dhanyavaad Rally". It would be proper to call it a police rally in the sense that the number of policemen, including those deployed to protect the BJP ministers and BJP MLAs from the public wrath, in the rally was more as compared to the common people. Indeed, it was an unimpressive show organized by an unpopular party and it vindicated those who had written its political obituary after March1, 2015, when it threw its ideology into a dustbin for a few loaves of office. All in all, it can be said that the BJP has lost the people's confidence and that it has been treading a path that would ensure its complete decimation in Jammu region. |
