Naveed's ingress, freedom of movement in Kashmir should be an eye opener for security forces
8/8/2015 11:56:55 PM
ET Report
Jammu, Aug 8: Mohd. Yakub, father of captured terrorist, Mohammad Naveed feels he is the unfortunate father of Naveed. He tells, on phone to Indian journalists that the Lashkar and the Pakistani Army (fauj) were after Yakub's family.
Yakub was on his phone from his residence in Faisalabad in Pakistan. Still the establishment in Islamabad, particularly Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman categorically denied that Mohd. Naveed belonged to Pakistan. Their categorical rejection of New Delhi's claim that Naveed had come from Pakistan to kill "Hindus" in Jammu and Kashmir bore resemblance to Pakistan's denial that Ajmal Kasab, who had been captured during the terrorist strike in Mumbai in 2008 in which over 166 people lost their lives was a Pakistani.
Detailed reports had appeared on various TV news channels about the way Naveed and four others had crossed into Kashmir from across the Kupwara sector. These terrorists, after having received arms training in camps across the LOC, had snapped the border fence and crossed into Kupwara. After crossing the LOC they used the GPS and decided to travel to the shrine of Baba Rishi in Tangmarg area, about 18 kms from Kupwara.
What has proved amazing and intriguing is the way commentators from Pakistan, some of them having retired as Brigadiers, who were part of discussion on Wednesday's incident at Udhampur vehemently rejected the claim of Indian commentators that Naveed and others had come from Pakistan.
Infiltration of Mohd. Naveed and his associates into Kashmir and their onward journey to Baba Reshi, to Pulwama and to Udhampur seems to be an apt script for a Bollywood film. Mohammad Naved captured in Udhampur on Wednesday after he and another Pakistani terrorist attacked a Border Security Force convoy, says the four-member Lashkar-e-Taiba module managed to escape after a police team intercepted it in Pulwama of south Kashmir on July 23.
Naved told interrogators that he had been in India since May 27 and had "enough local support". He had been in constant touch with Abu Dujana, the number two in the LeT hierarchy.
From a LeT hideout at Khrew in south Kashmir, where they spent 40 days, the terrorists left for Pulwama on a small truck on July 23 and were intercepted. Naved told interrogators that most of the LeT leadership visited the Khrew hideout during Ramzan.
According to the report prepared by Naveed's interrogators Naved started his journey from his launching pad at Halan in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 27, along with Noman, who was killed on Wednesday, and Okasha and Mohammad Bhai of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in northwest Pakistan.
He reached the Line of Control in Kupwara on June 2 and cut the fence to enter Indian territory. The group then switched on a GPS device to find their way and walked 18 kilometres to reach Baba Rishi at Tangmarg on June 7, where they met a local guide. Two days later, they were received by another local guide.
Thank God Pakistan, in particular its foreign office spokesman, are silent after Naveed's disclosure and his father's plea to the Indian security forces to spare him. What seems to have motivated Naveed to tell his captors, all being civilians, to shoot him was his fears that the Lashkar activists and the Pakistan Army may come down heavily on the members of his family, particularly his parents. Lashkar and the Pakistan Army authorities may have not cherished the way Naveed was captured instead of having lost his life while fighting the BSF. The problem with Pakistan is once any terrorist is captured he has to spill the beans which exposes Pakistan's hand in exporting terror to India.
Naveed's story and the foreign Office denial of Naveed being a resident of Pakistan is yet another proof of lack coordination and cooperation between the civilian regime in Pakistan and the Army. Another proof, if at all required, is about arms training camps being run in Pakistan and Occupied Kashmir.
Equally intriguing is the way the Army in Pakistan has remained engaged in sabotaging the process of dialogue. Whenever the two sides decide to hold parleys Army resorts to repeated ceasefire violations on the border or bring groups of militants on the launch pads on the LOC and the IB for pushing them into Jammu and Kashmir. This is what has been witnessed in recent days after Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif, decided at Ufa in Russia, to hold bilateral talks and in this connection the beginning was to be made through the process of dialogue between the two national security advisers of the two prime Ministers.
In fact the Army in Pakistan wanted to provoke New Delhi so that the ensuing talks were called off but Narendra Modi has opted for playing his trump card by insisting that whatever has happened in Udhampur or the LOC and the IB should not cast their shadow on the proposed talks.
The very ingress into Kashmir of Naveed, his colleagues and their freedom of movement in the valley should be an eye opener for the Army and the security forces. The Army and the Paramilitary forces need to upgrade the entire security grid within the state and the infiltration grid on the LOC and the IB if they have to ensure peace.
