Does Modi prefer action to wordy duel ?
8/18/2015 11:50:30 PM
Both the National Conference and the Congress leaders have berated Prime Minister,Narendra Modi, for his silence on the latest ceasefire violations being committed by the Pakistani troops in which more than six civilians were killed and over 10 were injured.Senior Congress leader and leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha,Ghulam Nabi Azad, had expected Modi to punch Pakistan the most hard while he (Modi) was addressing the independence day function in New Delhi on Saturday.Azad has stated that while Modi was commenting on India's foreign relations he should have voiced criticism against Pakistan for having derailed peace in Jammu and Kashmir by resorting to repeated ceasefire violations. What seems to have pained Azad is the way Modi remained silent,as if oblivious of the situation,on the ceasefire violations with the result Pakistani troops had a field day by resorting to series of ceaasefire violations on the LoC and the IB during the last several days.Azad has stated that when the BJP was in the opposition it used to ridicule and criticize the Congress led UPA Government whenever it favoured reopening of the channels of dialogue with Pakistan on the plea that terror and t alks should not go together. The Congress leader ridiculed Modi when he said that his 56 inches broad chest,of which he used to boast during the BJP campaign in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll, seems to have shrunk to six inches size chest. Former Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, too questioned Modi's silence on the issue. What seems to have enraged Omar Abdullah is the way Modi had not tweeted any condolence message to the bereaved families of six civilians who were killed in Pakistani Army firing on the border. Omar has said that when Modi has time for tweeting on obscure birthdays and national days why he could not tweet on the issue related to the killing of six civilians in Pak firing ?
Well was it necessary for Modi to refer to the repeated ceasefire violations being committed by Pakistani troops during his address to the nation from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort on August 15 when the Government,he has been heading, had summoned the Pakistan High Commissioner to India,Abdul Basit,to the Foreign office in New Delhi where India lodged a strong protest against ceasefire violations ? During the last several years New Delhi has been criticizing Islamabad and the Pakistan Army for violating the ceasefire by pounding the Indian border outposts and the houses of civilians.Has these protests yielded any result ? Certainly not.And hence summoning of the Pak High Commissioner by the External Affairs Ministry for handing over India's protest note against ceasefire violations could be the right diplomatic move.Summoning Abdul Basit for making him aware of the sentiments of anger and hurt against ceasefire violations. The way Basit was summoned and New Delhi registered its protest against Pak Army's ceasefire violations made bigger news than Modi reference at Independence Day function could have made.
Apart from this diplomatic exercise India has hit hard the enemy forces. In this connection one has to rely on the recent statements issued by the Union Home Minister,Rajnath Singh, and the Defence Minister,Manohar Parrikar. Both the central Ministers has assured the nation that both the BSF and the Army have been issued inst ructions to retaliate with force and fury in order to force Pakistani guns to fall silent. This should satisfy both Omar Abdullah and Ghulam Nabi Azad. If one compares the Indian retaliation during the BJP led NDA Government with the Congress led UPA Government the level of retaliation during the last six months has been more ferocious and forceful than it was during the UPA rule.
Now that Pakistan has responded to India's offer for holding NSA level talks it was mandatory on the part of New Delhi to ignore breezy ceasefire violations being committed by the Pakistani troops. And had Modi, the author of the NSA level talks, reacted against these ceasefire violations it could have provoked Islamabad to blame New Delhi for sabotaging bilateral talks.Instead of words Modi seems to believe in action and that is indicated by the way Pakistan has started protesting against what it calls heavy firing resorted to by the Indian forces. And if the past records are any guide Pakistan has never raised its voice criticizing Indian forces for targeting Pak border outposts and residential houses during the 10-year Congress rule. What does it indicate ?It denotes that Pakistan forces have come under heavy pressure by the equally heavy retaliation by the Indian troops.
