Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 18: With the government maintaining a total silence on the issue of conversion of agriculture land for commercial purposes in Kashmir, people have expressed serious concern over the matter.
In most areas of the valley, people have converted the fertile agriculture land for horticulture purposes by establishing the orchards of apple, cherry and pears and almonds.
Despite having good irrigation facilities the people especially farming community in various parts of Kashmir have converted their rich and fertile agriculture land for horticulture purposes after seeing the high yielding potential of fruit trees.
Sources said the farmers are fast converting their agriculture land especially in Bijebehara, Pahalgam,Tral, Pampore, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Ganderbal, Budgam, Pattan, Baramulla, Sopore, Kupwara and Handwara tehsils in orchards leaving a very limited scope for cultivation of paddy, wheat and oil seeds.
This trend though has been a cause of concern among the people the government is totally sleeping over issue. Even the urban areas and suburban localities are being converted for construction of colonies and commercial complexes after sheer violation of standing rules and government directives, according to sources.
Sources said the failure of the authorities to respect the standing rules in this regard has emboldened the people but there is no body to take action against them. Sources said the issue has been taken up by various social organisations with the government as well as authorities of Agriculture Department but to no avail.
Sources said had the government acted in time by not giving a long rope to the people who in open violation of standing rules are converting the Agriculture land for commercial and horticulture purposes, the situation would have not deteriorated to such extent. If such a trend continues for next 15 to 20 years there will be no land left in Kashmir for agriculture purposes, sources added.
Some social organisations concerned over the trend had sought the immediate intervention of the government in this regard and demanded blanket ban on conversion of agriculture land for commercial purposes or horticulture.
These organisations have sought the immediate intervention of the Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister in the matter and urged them to issue directives to concerned authorities to act tough against those violating the standing law.
The government should make a fresh survey of the land in the valley and demarcate that how much can be used for agriculture purposes and how much for commercial so that in future such guidelines are not violated by anybody, how powerful he or she may be, the sources added.
