ET Report
JAMMU, Aug 18: The J&K's winter capital continues to be without full-time DIG, SSP and SP (south) for the past few months. Courtesy: BJP.
The three important posts in police department fell vacant a few months back but BJP ministers and senior party functionaries, who are given the responsibility of deciding about transfers and postings in police and civil administration in Jammu region, have not been able to arrive at a consensus over the choice of police officers.
While the post of DIG fell vacant after the retirement of Shakil Beig a few months back, that of SP (south) fell vacant in January this year. The post of SSP, Jammu, had fallen vacant after the transfer of Uttam Chand following the killing of a Sikh youth in police firing at Satwari on June 4 this year. None of these posts has so far been filled by the government and their additional charge was with other police officers.
Official sources said the inordinate delay in filling these posts was due to the fact that BJP ministers and other senior party functionaries were confused over the choice of police officers.
While chief minister Mufti Mohammad Syed had asked deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh to fill these posts at the earliest, BJP was yet undecided over the choice of police officers.
This is for the first time that all the three main posts of police officers are lying vacant in Jammu at a time when Amarnath yatra, which faces a threat from militants, is in progress and there is an emergent need of enhanced vigil in the winter capital in view of increased infiltration bids by militants from across the International Border.
It may be mentioned here that as per an understanding between the two coalition partners, BJP and PDP would be taking decisions about the transfers and postings of senior government officers in Jammu and Kashmir divisions respectively.
According to sources, BJP has been told by its coalition partner that if it fails to finalise the names of three police officers for their posting as DIG, SSP and SP (south) in Jammu in near future, the government would be issuing an order in this regard on its own.
