Contractual teachers not paid for months | Tale of State’s worsening education sector | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 18: Mocking at the claims of the State Education Department of bringing about immense improvement in education sector, the contractual lecturers have not been paid for months and have accused government of turning blind eye towards their plight. Accusing the college authorities of taking them for a ride, the contractual lecturers of Degree College Ganderbal on Tuesday staged protest demonstration against the clerical staff for manhandling one of their colleagues. Reports informed that the aggrieved contractual teachers boycotted their routine work while pitching for a stern action against the clerk who allegedly had manhandled Dr Fayaz, a contractual lecturer teaching Zoology in the college. One of the clerical staff members manhandled Fayaz when he objected to delay over disbursement of the wages of the contractual staff. "He simply asked for the reason that why the monthly wages are not being given to us despite passing of the several months. Surprisingly, he was beaten to pulp by the staff of the establishment department without any reason," said the protesting teachers. They added that they were facing lot of hardships because their monthly salaries were pending for past six months. "Irony is that we are not being treated as teachers at all. We are being considered as mere labourers who had to work tirelessly with no remunerations ," teachers added. They maintained that they had approached the concerned authorities several times but no heed was paid to their repeated requests. "We have handed over hundreds of representations to the government, pleading before it for release of our monthly wages but no action till date has been taken and we continue to suffer at the hands of this official anarchy," said one of the contractual teachers. Others while seconding him said that they work much more than the permanent lecturers in the college but a step motherly treatment was being accorded to them. "We undergo the biometric attendance everyday and give more than five lectures back to back in different classes. The permanent staff here can be seen napping with no accountability at all," aggrieved teachers said. They maintained further that since March not even a single penny had been given to them. Meanwhile, when contacted, the Principal Degree College Ganderbal Prof Nasreen Malik said that the issue is being looked into and very soon the wages of contractual teacher appointed in the college shall be given. "Actually, so far we have not received a confirmation order from the nodal principal colleges about the appointment of these contractual lecturers. Once we receive it, we will be able process their wages," said the Principal. When asked about the reason why till date the confirmation orders have not been sought, she passed the buck to the nodal principal colleges, saying he will be in a better position to explain the issue. However, the nodal principal was not available for the comment. |
