Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 18: With the apathetic attitude of Doda administration towards a depressed community which speaks a volume about its neglect, approximately 50% of elderly persons of Mahasha community in Doda district have been deprived of old age pension scheme.
"Out of 192 elderly people of this neglected community only 101 have been covered under old age pension scheme leaving 91 persons without the benefits of old age scheme due to indifferent approach of the concerned administration for not taking appropriate steps to cover them under scheme ," sources told Early Times.
The Mahasha community is an underprivileged community in Doda district which is mostly economically backward and hardly had their own sources of sustenance and comes under Scheduled Caste category; they informed further, adding that most the people of this community are illiterate.
The injustice towards this community can be gauged from the fact that some of the elderly people have crossed the age of 80 and they are still waiting for old age pension scheme benefit, they said further adding that as per tehsil wise break Bhaderwah tehsil has topped with 25 been covered under old age pension scheme despite repeated request by them. Similarly in tehsil Bhalessa this number is at 20, Tehsil Thateri has 17, teshil Doda 10, tehsil Asser 19. Most of them fall Below Poverty Line (BPL) followed by Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Above Poverty Line (APL), they said. This community has less land holding and most families are living in one are two rooms.
