As working season is ending in Valley, TDAs await funds allocation | | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 18: With working season in the Valley nearing its end, the government is yet to allocate funds to the Tourism Development Authorities (TDAs) under the state plan, hitting the infrastructure development of many tourist destinations. Official sources said that due to the delay in the allocation of funds, all works and projects which were supposed to be completed or taken up this year have been put on a complete halt. "In the Valley, the season for carrying out construction works is up to October only. One wonders why the government has not allocated any funds to the TDAs even as five months of the working season have already passed," said an official. The government on one hand, the official said, is identifying new spots with tourism potential for developing them as tourism destinations, on the other hand it is not serious about the infrastructural development at the existing places which remain flooded with tourists. "When you don't have funds for improving the tourism infrastructure at the (TDAs), one wonders what is the fun of identifying new spots," an official posted at one of the development authorities told Early Times. Another official said that the government is not even giving authorization to the heads of the TDAs to go ahead with the proposed works. "In case of shortage of funds the government authorizes the heads of the departments to proceed till the funds are released. But neither there is any fund allocation nor any authorization on part of government. If authorized we can at least complete the tendering process for various works till the funds come," the official said. He said it is irony that despite Chief Minister holding the tourism portfolio himself the TDAs await fund allocation from last five months. Official sources said that government has asked the TDAs to even stop work on the projects which the previous government has started. "People were right when they criticized Chief Minister for wasting money on the visits which he made to several states under tourism promotion," he added. Official posted in South Kashmir's Verinag told Early Times that they had proposed several developmental works for booting the spot but due to financial crisis they aren't even able to construct required inconvenience points. |
