Cop, civilian killed as militants attack police post at Sopore | Militants decamped with INSAS rifle of martyred cop | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Aug 18: A policeman and a civilian were killed after suspected militants attacked a police post guarding a shrine at Tujjer Shareef village in Sopore town of Baramulla district in north Kashmir on Tuesday. Meanwhile the militants also decamped with the service rifle (INSAS) of the deceased cop. A senior police official told Early Times that suspected militants on Tuesday afternoon killed a policeman posted on guard duty at a shrine in Tujjer village of Sopore town in Baramulla district. Militants opened indiscriminate fire upon the policeman, guarding the shrine of Hazrat Sultan-ul Arifeen Makhdoom at Tujjer Shareef in Sopore town, said official. A top official said that the two militants came on a motorbike and opened fire at the guard post at the shrine. The sentry, Fayaz Ahmad Bhat of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) 13 Battalion, was critically injured and a handicapped person on a wheel chair outside the shrine was also hit by bullets. Police official said that in the attack a cop Fayaz Ahmad of Wadoora Sopore and a civilian Abdul Rahim Lone sustained serious bullet injuries. They were shifted to the nearby Sub District Hospital Sopore where doctors declared the cop as dead on arrival. Abdul Rahim son of Jamal Ud-Din Lone, a local resident of Tujjer used to stay at the shrine to attend the devotees, later succumbed to the injuries, said official. After the attack, the militants also decamped with the service rifle INSAS of the deceased cop while fleeing the scene. Soon after the incident, a heavy contingent of army, CRPF and SOG cordoned off the whole area and launched massive hunt to nab the attackers. Meanwhile Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police, north Kashmir range Garib Daas told Early Times that, "Militants, believed to be two in number, opened indiscriminate fire upon the policemen, guarding the shrine, in Tujjar Shareef this afternoon. Fayaz Ahmad, an IRP 13 Bn cop of Wadoora Sopore got killed in the militant attack, he added, saying the militants also decamped the service rifle of the deceased cop. "We have launched a manhunt to nab the attackers," the DIG added. |
