Wild beats on prowl, ill-equipped wildlife staff fails to handle crisis | | | Mohd Majid Malik Early Times Report Doda, Aug 18: As the incidents of man- animal conflict are increasing at an alarming rate in erstwhile Doda district and people accused that Wildlife department staff is helpless to do much to control the damages caused during these wild animal attacks as it is lacking the vital equipments. Panicked has gripped in upper remote villages of erstwhile Doda district as people are living under constant threat due to frequent leopard and bear attacks on humans and their livestock from the past few months. Local reports said bear and leopard attacked and critically wounded half a dozen people in Bhagwah, Udyanpur ,Gundna and other parts of Doda district for the last six months and locals even the school going children were also attacked but wild department is in deep slumber . They also said that wild animals had also killed many sheep and pet animals. "The people of far flung areas of Bhagwah , Bharath, Gundana, Marmath, Kastigarh, Upper Bhalessa , Bonjwa, Saraz and Dessa area do not venture out of their homes after the sunset," the residents said and added that parents are seen reluctant to send their wards to the school fearing wild animal attacks. They said the bears also have damaged orchards and crops at various places resulting economic loss to the people. Alleging that the wildlife department of failing to tackle the issue, a villager Gulam Nabi of Bharath, "Every time we inform the wildlife officers about the roaming of bears, they turn deaf ears to our plea and never turn up." "Ill-equipped wildlife department fails to protect Doda district plagued with man-animal conflict rise, he said. According to reliable sources Wildlife Department in Doda has no sources to purchase the modern and latest wild animal traps which costs approx. Rs 1.50 Lakhs per trap. "The incidents of man animal conflict could only be reduced to an extent if the concerned agency has required equipment to handle the crisis," said an official of wild life department on promised annonymity. Meanwhile wildlife experts attribute the intrusion of wild animals in the residential areas due to shrinking of their natural habitat. "The leopards make frequent forays into villages mostly in the areas where the forest had been destroyed," the wildlife experts observed. ."We need to protect bear habitants from human intervention to prevent the bears from intruding into human habitations," they said. Not a single day passes without reports about human-animal conflict in the countryside making it to newsrooms in erstwhile Doda district . |
