Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 18: Krishi Vigyan Kendra Jammu, R.S.Pura, SKUAST-J organized awareness camp cum Poster and drawing competition on Parthenium control at Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Education and Research, Village Rangpur, R.S.Pura. According to press release, at the beginning, lectures on the eradication of Parthenium were conducted. Dr Sanjay Khar (Programme Coordinator KVK, Jammu) welcomed the students and informed that the Parthenium awareness/eradication week is being organized throughout the country from August 16 to 22. He informed about the harmful effects of Parthenium on human health and livestock which includes disorder, Contact dermatitis, Eczema, Eczematoid dermatitis, Dermatitis, Allergic reaction, Allergic papules, Fatigue, Severe dermatitis, Fever in cows, Ulcerations in buffaloes, horses, donkeys, sheep, and goats. Those who come in contact with Parthenium they suffer from blisters in mouth, nose, stomach and neck. Dr Rakesh Sharma (Sr. Scientist, Agriculture Extension) further elaborated that diseases like skin allergies, Asthma and other skin diseases occur in human beings in the Parthenium affected areas. The milking animals like cows after coming in contact with Parthenium give 20-40% less milk. He provided a detailed view about the life cycle of the weed and demonstrated the chemical as well as biological methods to be adopted for the eradication of the weed. Dr Punit Choudhary (Scientist Forestry) discussed various methods like manual, chemical, biological and integrated methods together with their merits and demerits with students and motivated them to constitute a small village body to eradicate Parthenium from village. Later, the scientists demonstrated the mechanical method of weed control to the students to uproot the Parthenium growing outside of their school premises. |
