LMD books erring traders, imposes Penalty

Kathua, Sept 18: Acting on complaints, Legal Metrology Department paid surprise visit and imposed penalty on traders for using non-standard weights and measures in rural of district Kathua.
According to press release a team from LMD headed by the Assistant Controller, Ajay Verma and other officers conducted checking of various business establishments especially Karayana shops, Procurement Dealer, Saw Mill, vegetable/fruit Seller, Mini Flour Mill, in the village Mirpur Ram and other rural Areas adjoining to Punjab Border of Tehsil Nagri, Hamirpur, Hirananagr and adjoining Areas of Tehsil Hiranagar and at Kathua Town during the current Week.
During Inspection approximately 40 traders were inspected, nine were booked for violation of various provisions of J&K Weights and Measures Enforcement Act 1997 and Package Commodities Rules during the current week.
8 Challans of the booked traders were Compounded and a penalty of Rs 15100 was imposed on the erring traders for violation of various provisions of J&K weights and Measures Act Enforcement (Amendment) Act 2011 and Package Commodities Rules during the current week.
During the checking the department also booked one Gas Agency for violation of various provisions of J&K weights and Measures Enforcement (Amendment) Act 2011. On the assurance of the management of the Gas Agency not to violate the provisions of said Act in future, the case was compounded by the undersigned and penalty of 10,000 was imposed.
The Department directed all the traders to use only verified Weights and Measures for Business transactions and display MRP, PKD, Net Contents and complete address and Customer care Number on the Commodities to be sold in package Form.
The Department has also warned the unscrupulous traders to desist away from using unfair trade practices to cheat the innocent Consumers and also appealed to the Consumers to remain vigilant while purchasing the Commodities.
