A party that can't defend itself and its policies | BJP of spokespersons | | Early Times Report jammu, Sept 18: The BJP is the only party in Jammu & Kashmir which has a platoon of spokespersons. In fact, it is a party of spokespersons most of whom are from non-RSS and non-BJP background. It has State-level spokespersons and also a spokesperson for Kashmir Valley, who of all the spokespersons is very vocal and he invariably defends the perverted Kashmiri politics. This Kashmiri BJP spokesperson Khalid Jehangir, who was inducted by Narendra Modi at Hiranagar in 2014, is also seen on national televisions speaking on ideological issues suggesting that he has been authorized by the high command to represent the view of the party on Jammu & Kashmir and such issues as Jazya tax. On occasions, the BJP also fields Hina Bhat to represent the party. In fact, the Kashmiri BJP spokesperson and Hina Bhat have become the faces of the BJP. The BJP also has a chief spokesperson. Two days, ago, the party appointed two more spokespersons, saying their appointment would further strengthen the party's media cell. Interestingly, the Jammu-based BJP spokespersons hardly speak. Of course, on occasions they do address press conferences and take up issues which for the people are just irrelevant. On occasions, the BJP spokespersons speak on themes which make the people laugh at the party. For example, they make appeals to the State Government to do this or that or to tell the general public that the party is not happy with certain policy/policies of the State Government. And, they do so despite the fact that the BJP is part of the Government. Actually, the problem of the BJP spokespersons is that they have to deal with issues which they cannot defend because the party has deviated completely from its ideology and core issues or because the BJP high command has taken a complete U-turn on all the issues which it used to raise before the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. They cannot defend the party's decision to put Article 370 on the backburner; they cannot justify the agenda of alliance that has given everything to Kashmir; they cannot speak for Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and what he stood for, worked for and laid down his life for; they cannot defend insignificant representation of the BJP in the Cabinet; they have no other option but to beat about the bush when it comes to issues like Dogra certificate, Jazya tax on Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, ban on cow slaughter and beef eating, shifting of AIIMS from Jammu to Kashmir, citizenship rights to refugees from Pakistan and Armed Forces Special Powers Act; they cannot take on the PDP which day-in-and-day-out talks good about Pakistan, questions the status of Jammu & Kashmir, talks about demilitarization, soft borders, self-rule, Islamic banking and healing touch and which has allowed full freedom to separatists to do whatever they want to do in Kashmir; they cannot defend their own party when people denounce the BJP and the PDP for declaring Urdu compulsory for those who want to appear in the Naib Tehsildars' written test; they cannot defend the BJP when the people accuse it of making common cause with the Kashmiri leaders of all shades of opinion who oppose the demand in Jammu for the appointment of delimitation commission and adequate representation in the Assembly; they cannot defend their party when the people charge the BJP with creating a volcanic situation in the Valley by adopting a very soft attitude towards Kashmiri separatists; they cannot defend the party when the people say that the BJP has joined hands with pro-terrorist outfit; and so on. The fact of the matter is that all the Jammu-based spokespersons of the BJP have been put in an awkward situation by the party high command, which has turned ultra secular. "These poor spokespersons," according to insiders, "only cut a sorry figure as they are required to defend the indefensible" and that "these spokespersons admit in private that since they have nothing to defend their party, they prefer to avoid the media". |
