Army foils infiltration bid in Gurez, 5 militants killed | | | S Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report BANDIPORA, Sept 18: Army today claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control in Kanzalwan area of Gurez sector in this North Kashmir district in which five suspected infiltrators were killed. A senior police official said that during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday army patrolling party was guarding the Line of Control (LoC) who noticed the movement of suspected infiltrators near the border of Gurez sector. "First contact with the heavily armed militants was established on Thursday late night, as a group of 4-5 militants crossed the LoC in Gurez sector of Bandipora district. After this an intense gunfight ensued resulting in killing of two militants on Thursday late night and the encounter continued till Friday afternoon," said the police official. The police official said that the group of 4-5 heavily armed militants tried to sneak in this side along Line of Control (LoC) near Kanzalwan in Gurez sector. He said the alert troops manning the fence foiled their attempt which resulted into an encounter. "We prompted them to enter this side of Line of Control (LoC) soon after their entrance to this side. The whole area was cordoned off after which militants opened fire upon the security forces, the troops retaliated the fire. The militants took cover behind the rocks and bushes, after a deliberate operation by the army till afternoon, three more militants were killed taking toll to five," said the police official. The dead bodies of the militants were recovered, however the identity of the slain militants was not immediately ascertained, said the official. Huge cache of war like stores was recovered that includes five AK-47 rifles, 1 UBGL, I RPG, five magazines and other food items from the site of operation. However, the police official said that special forces took part in the operation. He said this is the first infiltration bid that army has foiled in Gurez sector, adding that the search operation was underway till the last reports came in. Srinagar based defence spokesperson, Col N N Joshi while talking to early times said that the contact with the militants was established near the Line of Control in Kanzalwan area of Gurez sector on Thursday late evening, in the initial gunfight two militants were killed after which encounter continued for several hours. "We resumed the operation on Friday morning. However there was an exchange of fire from both the sides on Fridaymorning in which three unidentified militants were killed, their identity was not ascertained yet," said the defence spokesman. He said that huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of operation. |
