Police wake up, arrests Aasiya from Soura | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 18: Police today arrested Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM) Chairperson Syed Aasiya Andrabi and whisked her away to the Women's Police Station at Rambagh in South Srinagar. Meanwhile, protests broke out in some areas of downtown Srinagar after the Friday prayers. Police sources said that a police party raided the house of Aasiya at Soura early in the morning and arrested her and took her to the Women's Police Station. The DeM chairperson was evading arrest ever since she waved the Pakistani flag on August 14. She had also telephonically addressed a programme that was held in Pakistan in the recent past. Police had already registered few cases against Aasiya and since then they were on look out for DeM Chairperson. Aasiya also created a flutter when she slaughtered a bovine animal immediately after the High Court imposed a ban on sale of beef in Jammu & Kashmir. The photograph of the slaughtering of the bovine animal had gone viral on social networking sites like facebook and Whatsapp. Sources said that police also arrested Aasiya's close confidante Fehmeeda Sofi from her residence. Aasiya waved the flag of Pakistan on August 14 and immediately she was booked for anti-national activities. The arrest of Aasiya has been condemned by the separatists and they called the action totally uncalled for. In the meantime, a teenager and a senior citizen sustained injuries due to pellet firing and teargas shelling by police afterFriday prayers at Nowhattta in downtown Srinagar. Reports of clashes between youths and security forces have also been reported from many areas of Kashmir and some persons sustained injuries in these clashes. Reports said that 15 years old Adil Bashir Khan resident of Haihama-Kupwara, presently putting up at Noorbagh in rented accommodation along with family, suffered grave injuries due to pellet firing at Nowhatta. Adil has sustained multiple wounds in his stomach and was rushed to SKIMS, Soura for treatment. In the same incident, 70 years old Ghulam Ahmad Kakroo resident of Narwara-Eidgah sustained injuries in leg after he was hit by a teargas canister fired by cops. Kakroo has suffered minor injuries and his condition is stated to be stable. Eyewitnesses told Early Times that scores of people carried out 'anti-India' and 'pro-freedom' slogans outside historical Jamia Masjid after the Friday prayers. The protesters were carrying flags of Pakistan as well as Jaish-e-Muhammad outfit. The youth pelted stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel posted in the area. The security forces fired scores of tear smoke shells in the area. Clashes between police and protesters erupted in Kupwara district of North Kashmir. Soon after Friday prayers, dozens of youth pelted stones on a local army bunker. Police rushed to the spot and chased away the protesters. Two persons including a cop sustained injuries in these clashes. Clashes between police and protesters were also reported from the Anantnag town of South Kashmir. A journalist sustained injuries during these protest demonstrations. Hundreds of people held protests in the town after Friday prayers and raised 'pro-freedom' and pro-Islam slogans. |
