Pulwama: Sept: 18: The residents of Pulwama have accused the municipal authorities of turning the bus stand into a dumping garbage site. The municipal council authorities, according to the residents, have not installed dustbins on the road sides, leading to accumulation of garbage in the bus stand. The garbage and other waste material collected from various areas of the town by the municipal council are dumped in the bus stand everyday, said the residents. "The staff of Municipal Committee collects garbage from various areas of the district and dumps it inside the bus stand which has become their daily routine now. Our health is deteriorating due the foul smell coming out from the heaps of garbage," said a tea seller Nazir Ahmed. "Heaps of garbage make the pedestrian movement difficult and also the stinking smell irritates the passengers. Sometimes they municipal officials burn garbage in the bus stand, causing pollution," said another shopkeeper"We apprised the officials in the municipal committee about the matter and sent various representations. However no action was taken," said a transporter. The people also complained about lack of drainage system and lavatory facilities inside the bus stand. "We pay Rs 10 as entry fee daily, but the authorities have failed to provide us basic facilities," the transporter said. "Just few drops of rain create hue and cry in the bus stand as it turns into a cesspool," he added. A top official of the municipal committee said, "I have recently resumed the charge. But I have taken up this issue with the officials concerned, and soon things would be sorted out." |
