Bhaderwah: Taxi operators fleece commuters | | | Bijay Charak Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 18: Taxi operators in Bhaderwah are brazenly fleecing the commuters by charging Rs 10 for a distance of just one kilometer. Many local residents told Early Times that two months ago the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bhaderwah had ordered the taxi operators and passenger vehicles to halt at new bus stand Bhaderwah instead of Seri Bazaar. "Seri Bazaar is only one kilometer from the new bus stand and headquarters of most of the departments including tehsildar office, hospital, SDM office, tehsil court etc are located there," said a local resident Balwan Singh Parihar. He said that from the bus stand to Seri Bazar, there is no public transport facility. So the people, who come from Jammu, Doda, Kishtwar or from any other area take taxicabs to reach there. "But the taxi operators loot people and charge as per their whims and fancies," said Parihar. Another local resident Mohammad Ayub said that commuters were compelled to pay Rs 10 for a distance of one km, and "if anyone asks these taxi operators for rate list, they start misbehaving." "Traffic Police is not active here, despite the fact that there is rampant violation of traffic norms and all matadors are running overload on various routes," said Ayub. He said if the SDM should have first arranged some public transport service to Seri Bazaar so that the customers would not be fleeced. The SDM Bhaderwah and ARTO Bhaderwah did not return repeated calls from Early Times for their comment. |
