Overloaded vehicles still rules roads, defy 'safety norms' | | | Ashwani Sharma Early Times Report Udhampur, Sept 18: With the traffic police and concerned authorities choosing to look the other way, overloading in buses, mini buses and other private transport goes unchecked, especially in rural areas of Udhampur despite the fact that people have lost their lives in accidents in the hilly terrains across the state over past years. The passenger transport which completely is in private hands in the state had also resorted to various tactics in creating more space than the seating capacity in their vehicles to generate extra income, brushing aside from the risk to lives of passengers. The link roads leading to Khordi, Barmeen, Ramnagar, Tirchi, Latti, Gandala, Panchari, Mongri, Jaganoo and Patan and etc witness overloading to its fullest of vehicles and it is a routine on all the rural and hilly areas where people are forced to wait for hours together for a next bus or tempo to reach their destination. Locals yet have not reconciled from the road tragedies which have left many people crippled and others dead in the past years but all has failed to make concerned authorities to initiate action against the erring and habitual traffic law violators on the roads, said Rakesh Gupta a collegiate from GDC Udhampur, further adding, "just for their vested materialistic interests." "Overloading has become a common problem in rural areas. Overloading is quite visible on roads but don't know why the authorities seem to be reluctant in initiating action against the violators," another Local said. "Due to absence of government-transport, the private bus and mini bus operators always try to make good profit by resorting to overloading knowing the fact the public is at their mercy, another local said, however, giving a benefit of doubt to police added, ""Unfortunately, every time we blame on traffic police and other authorities but lack of civic sense attributes majority of accidents." ARTO Udhampur Rajesh Gupta said the appropriate actions will be taken against the traffic law violators and awareness programme too will be held in this regard. He said, "We (Transport Department) have challaned almost 4 mini buses for overloading while routine nakas too have been arranged to curb te menace. |
