Beef may upset rulers' stomach
Spare cow, lift ban from other animals'

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 18: The beef controversy has not only pushed the coalition government to the wall but has the potential of further polarising the state.
Both the coalition partners have played to the galleries so far. Senseless and reckless statements have been issued. The BJP has made clear that it will not budge an inch from the stand and will seek implementation of the ban in letter and spirit.
The PDP on the other has assured the Valley people that the beef will continue to be sold and consumed in the valley as usual. The ruling of the ulema yesterday urging people to defy the ban has further complicated the issuer. And with Eid-ul-Azha round the corner, thousands of animals are likely to be slaughtered in three days starting Friday. There is a general feeling in Kashmir that the police will not implement the ban. The people are angry and seem determined to resist "police onslaught" tooth and nail. The issue, political experts opine will set Kashmir on fire yet again if proper measures are not taken now. The measures, according to them, can be a ordinance to repeal the law on slaughter of beef. But supporting such an ordinance will not be easy for the BJP.
The people of Jammu will never allow or accept it. The PDPO, however, will gain some ground by bringing in the ordinance.
The story does not end here. The National Conference and the Engineer Rashid's party have introduced bills in the Legislative Assembly. Responding to this, the VHP has threatened "economic blockade" of Kashmir if the bills are taken up for discussion in the assembly. The government has limited options. If the issue is not handled properly, the government will fall and Kashmir will witness yet another spell of violence, believe political experts.
However, they have a word of advice for the government. "Cow is sacred for Hindus. Spare the cow and lift the ban from rest of the animals," they suggest.
