Reports said Kohli was on way to Kalakote from Srinagar when he stopped the SRTC bus bearing registration number JKO1Y/452 at Lal Ghulam Paharan on the Mughal Road and found seven passengers travelling without tickets. "During the surprise check Minister found 26 passengers traveling in the bus having seating capacity of 19," an official accompanying the Kohli told Early Times. He said that among the 26 passengers seven were travelling without tickets. "Ferrying passengers without tickets is the main reason for the losses to SRTC," said the Minister after checking the vehicle. Meanwhile, an order issued by the SRTC confirmed the suspension of bus conductor Ghulam Nabi. "Whereas, conductor Ghulam Nabi was deputed with vehicle number JKO1Y/452 on Rajouri to Srinagar route was intercepted and checked by Transport Minister, who is also the chairman of SRTC, and was found carrying seven passengers without tickets," order issued by SRTC Kashmir reads. "Pursuant to carrying of passengers without tickets Ghulam Nabi is placed under suspension with immediate effect," it added. Notably, Kohli has been making efforts to streamline the loss-making SRTC. Transport Research Wing of Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in 2014 disclosed that SRTC has only 46 percent of the available fleet of vehicles operational. It further disclosed that SRTC earned Rs. 5845.36 lakh revenue in 2012 and this dipped in 2013 to Rs. 5453.78 lakh. Matters were made worse by the cost of operation which increased from Rs. 8119.24 lakhs in 2012 to Rs. 8234.63 lakhs in 2013. Hence, the losses which were Rs. 2273.88 lakh in 2012 increased to Rs. 2780.85 lakh in 2013. The report has analyzed the revenue earnings as well as accumulated losses. According to this, SRTC has been earning revenue of Rs. 26.33 per kilometre of its run while spending Rs. 39.76 per kilometre on the maintenance. |
