Hub of knowledge now city of illiterates | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sepr 18:The historic city of Srinagar which once was a seat of learning is now more illiterate than Jammu, Leh and Kargil. This shocking information has been revealed by the 2011 census. It is in place to mention here that Srinagar had the honour of hosting one of the three Buddhist Conferences. The scholarship of the historic city was even acknowledged by Shankaracharia. Interestingly, Leh and Kargil districts considered backward even today have better literacy rate than other districts except Jammu which has more literates than other districts. The district has just 16% illiterate followed by Leh, and Kargil with 19.52 percent and 25.51 per cent illiterates respectively. The Srinagar district is at serial No 4. The improved figures of Leh are supplemented by the number of schools in the district. For a population of 2.73 lakhs, Leh district has more than 900 schools as compared to Srinagar where there are only 500 schools to cater to a population of 12 lakhs. The population of Jammu district is around 15 lakhs and it has around 1500 government schools. The districts with worst literacy rate are Ramban followed by Bandipora. Central Kashmir's Budgam closely follows Bandipora with 42.02 per cent. The third district in Kashmir region with the worst literacy rate is district Ganderbal with 40.01 illiterates. As per the census almost 31.26 per cent population of the state is still illiterate. The four districts of South Kashmir have more than 35% illiterates, the survey reveals. Jammu's Doda district has 34.03 percent illiterates followed by north Kashmir's Kupwara district with 33.08 per cent and Baramulla with 33.07 per cent. The figures for Poonch and Udhampur are equally disgusting. |
