Defence, Home Ministry oppose withdrawal of troops from Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 23: Despite repeated pleas made by Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, for withdrawal of Army from Kashmir valley, the Defence Ministry and the Home Ministry opposed the idea saying lowering the guard in the valley will give an edge to militants. On the contrary the ministries are in favour of increasing the vigil. According to them, the militant outfits especially Hizbul Mujahdeen have started recruiting educated boys in Kashmir. These fresh recruits were being imparted arms training in make-shift camps in the hilly areas of the state. In addition to this those militants, who have received arms training in camps across the LoC and have become quite active in the state which is evident from series of attacks they have launched against security forces and civilians. It is in this connection that the Army authorities have ruled out possibility for withdrawal of troops from the Kashmir valley, because they believe the time is not right and forces may lose ground and gains they so "painstakingly" made during the last two decades. Senior Army functionaries have made it clear that during the last over two decades the Army and the security forces have rendered great sacrifices for promoting peace in the valley and once troops were withdrawn whatever gains the security forces had achieved could be nullified. These functionaries said due to persistent efforts of the Army and other security forces, security forces have a network grid of security forces in Kashmir, which saw a lot of violence over the last 25-26 years. And the Army does not want the security scenario to get derailed allowing militants to gain the upper hand. Despite recent peace agreement between the Indian and Pakistani forces militants have been making serious bids for sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir for raising the level of violence. Hence Mufti Sayeed has been informed about the serious consequences that could emerge if the Army was withdrawn from within the valley. The Union Home Ministry has also conveyed to the Chief Minister that the situation was not back to normal because militants were getting quite active with moral and material support from official and non-state agencies from across the LoC and the IB. In order to foil these ingress bids on the border and in a bid to prevent militants from kicking up major incidents of violence presence of Army and other security forces were essential. |
