Deptt of Ecology to host festival on food, not environmental conservation | Kare najar badaste gilkar! | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 23: The state's Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, whose priority should have been to protect and manage environmental issues, is holding a food festival here next month. Documents in possession of Early Times reveal that the department has sought funds for holding food festival at Institute of Hotel Management, Raj Bagh, Srinagar on October 4. Director of the department, in a letter (no: DERS/15/Food Festival/2296-99 dated: 17-09-2015) to Principal Secretary Department of Forest, Environment and Ecology has sought funds worth Rs 57,000 for holding the festival. The festival "Junglik khazanne tamaikh khen chenn" is being organised in collaboration with the Institute of Hotel Management. "At a time when the state is facing acute financial crisis and has even been unable to rehabilitate the flood victims, what is the fun of spending such a huge amount on food festival," asked a senior official of the department. "The department is not meant for organising food festivals but to protect and manage environment. We are at loss to understand why the Director is interested in such a wasteful expenditure," he said and added the basic job of the department is to identify areas of environmental concern and to advise the government on such issues. "Besides, our job is to formulate plans for sustainable environmental protection; advise the dispensation on formulation of environmental related policies/issues; create environmental awareness; educate the general masses on environmental issues; organize group discussions, debates, essay writing competitions, drawing competitions, slogan writing competitions, quiz competitions in schools, colleges, professional institutes in urban and as well as in rural areas," the official added. However, contrary to its mandate, sources told Early Times the directorate was spending the funds meant for environment protecting for those works where they get "personal benefits including self-publicity". "Instead of holding food festival, the department should have organised seminars and debates in schools and colleges to create awareness among the students regarding environment. It would have cost less money and would have yielded better results," they added. Some of the employees of the department appealed Forest Minister Bali Baghat and Principal Secretary Forest to take notice of these activities and issue orders for spending the funds in proper planned manner. |
