Beef row tears apart the State's social fabric | Time for intervention | | Beef row Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 23: Jammu and Kashmir has always been a troubled State. Obviously, it needed a responsible Government. However, the past developments have pointed out that no Government in the State ever discharged its obligations towards the people. They did not attempt to promote social amity and religious harmony. The present PDP-BJP dispensation too has utterly failed to come up to the expectations of the people of the State. Contrarily, it has chosen to follow the path that has already caused schism in the society. It was required to handle very carefully the raging controversy over the beef issue, but, it seems, it has decided to strengthen the forces which created the controversy over the otherwise settled issue. Its behaviour has been similar to the out of power and rabble-rousing parties like the National Conference and the Congress. The PDP has actually walked into the trap of its arch rivals thus creating difficulties for its own Government. The PDP-BJP coalition has mishandled the sensitive issue to the extent that the parties under oath and outside the system have been openly asking the communal elements to defy the Ranbir Panel Code (RPC) and butcher Cows in public places so that the majority community is set against the minority community and the vice-versa. The worse has been the role of the BJP, which always claimed that it was a truly nationalist party committed to secular values. Who had ever imagined that the BJP, instead of coming to the rescue of Additional Advocate General Vishal Sharma and Deputy Advocate General Parimoksh Seth, will join hands with the PDP to punish them for the role they played to defend the laws concerning ban on bovine killing and beef eating. Sharma and Seth deserved bouquets and not brickbats, for their remarkable performance, which was duly appreciated by Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Parimoksh Seth as a law abiding citizen had approached the High Court to seek its intervention so that the relevant laws were respected and implemented. Likewise, Vishal Sharma as a responsible Additional Advocate General represented the State in the way he was required to. The fact that the High Court gave due consideration to the PIL on the issue and found the arguments advanced by Sharma as logical should have clinched the controversy, but it was not to be. The result has been that while in Kashmir the communal as well as separatist forces joined hands to hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community, in Jammu, all the people have also joined hands to defeat the divisive and subversive politics being practiced brazenly by those who view things from narrow prism. The situation as it prevails both in Jammu Province and Kashmir valley has caused a sense of worry with the peace loving and liberal minded people questioning the very intention of the PDP-BJP coalition Government. The situation is alarming by any yardstick and it can culminate into violence in both the regions as the battle lines appear to have been drawn by the opponents and supporters of bovine killing and beef eating. Jammu and Kashmir State cannot afford any upheaval. For, Pakistan never misses any opportunity to take advantage of the uncertain conditions in the State to advance its break India agenda. What has added to the worry all the more is the indifferent attitude of the authorities in New Delhi towards the fast deteriorating situation in the sensitive State. There is still time for them to take cognizance of the prevailing situation and intervene before things go out of hand. New Delhi has to act taking into consideration serious developments which could unfold on the Eid day. |
