Ahead of Eid, Jammu East without portable water, electricity | | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 23: Jammu is known for its overwhelming water resources, but the inhabitants of various areas of Jammu East are suffering for want of potable water. The people have accused the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department of apathy. According to reports scores of villages in Jammu East like Dalpatian, Khatikan Talab, Kachi Chowni, Pacci Dhaki, Jhulakka, Company Bagh, Dhounthaly, Mastgrah, Kalijani and Mohalla Tawi and other adjacent areas are without portable water from past two days. There is acute shortage of safe drinking water from past two days. Ahead of Eid-Ul Azha, the department of Public Health Engineering (PHE) should restore the portable water at the earliest, said sources. Nazir Ahmad of Julakha alleged that Public Health Engineering (PHE) officials seem in a deep slumber to mitigate their problems, while as the Power Development Department (PDD) restored electricity today in various parts of Jammu East, which was off due to gushing winds and other problems. Another local resident of Mastgrah quoting PHE authorities said that there is some default in a pipeline at Kachi Chhowni and it will take two days for repair work. The irony is that Jammu is full of water reservoirs and then after people are suffering from water scarcity. There is no regularity of water and power supply for past two days in old city areas, particularly Jullahka Mohalla, Pacci Dhaki and Mastgrah and other adjacent areas, said sources. A group of local residents of Julakha told Early Times that they have been collecting water from a hand pump, but even that has been out of order for the last few days. Even thought there is no sufficient portable water in overhead tanks. However according to locals that they have informed PHE officials, but nothing has been done to mitigate their problems, locals complained. They said on Tuesday evening the unscheduled power cuts remained off throughout the night and finally restored in the morning. There is no water and power supply from September 22 and 23. The areas are suffering of water from past two months. "PHE official were contacted who expressed their inability to supply the water on September 23, while adding they said PHE official have told them that they are pumping water into the storage tanks but the water will be supplied only on September 24 morning, said locals. Locals added that the department should press water tankers into service at least for a week's time to address the shortage. Even on the occasion of Eid-Ul Azha we are deprived of the basic facility. |
