Bioaugmentation and its application in lake restoration
10/14/2015 10:16:40 PM
Dr.Manzoor Ahmad yetoo

Bioaugmentation consists in an increase of selected bacteria that will naturally help the decomposition and degradation of organic matter and excess nutrients from the lakes especially Golf course lakes and other water bodies which are more or less stagnant. These bacteria are natural, non pathogenic and are completely biodegradable, producing enzymes, which accelerate the rate of degradation. Thus helping in lake restoration.
Bioaugmantation increases the capacity of existing microbial population in wastewater treatment systems. When organic compounds are degraded they are converted into H2O, CO2 and energy, which is used by the bacteria in their rapid process of multiplication. There are several products in market which degrade the excess nutrients and help in eutrophication.
These producs are composed of strains of bacteria that degrade the excess nutrients, competing with algae and eliminating them, thus preventing the effect of eutrophication.
In India and especially in the state of Jammu and Kashmir we are having world class golf resorts with natural and artificial lakes inside as well as out side these resorts. If such practice is implemented ,we will be able to stop eutrophication of these lakes and water bodies. We are having a world famous Dal lake and wulur where we are loosing the depth and length of these lakes every year. Dal lake has been reduced from 22sqkms to only 11sqkms. It is estimated that 45000lts of urine and about 30 tons of human waste gets into thiss Dal lake every month. Its average depth has been reduced by 3mts and same is the fate of other lakes and water bodies of our state. There are many reasons but most important reason is the eutrophication caused by excess nutrients which get leached by dull develors. There are living house boats which need to install biotoilets and other bio augmentation strategies to stop this dying process of eutrophication. It is worth to mention here important water bodies in our state are shrinking and unfortunately we are not updating ourselves with modern methodologies like bioaugmentation. In other developing countries lakes experience the same slow death of eutrophication. There fore this is a need of anhour. This process increases the efficiency of waste water treatment system.Decomposes the excess nutrients,Prevents the excessive growth of plants and algae,Prevents the clogging of pumps, Prevents the increase of sediments and the decrease of water storage capacity,Prevents the organic and bacterial contamination of grass, Prevents the appearance of unpleasant odours and insects, andImproves the aesthetics of the lake. Each treatment plan is dosed depending on the parameter to reduce and the flow/volume of effluent, Each system is unique, as such, it must always be performed a comprehensive analysis of the treatment process and possible oscillations, It is an ongoing process, limited by the evolution of bacteria and, therefore, it takes a few weeks to clearly see the results,Unlike chemicals, bacteria are not always applied in the same initial amount (inoculation).
The products used in bioaugmentation are microbiological products based on a mixture of selectively adapted bacteria, which accelerates the decomposition of organic matter, the degradation of wastes, consumes excessive nutrients and sediments at the bottom of lakes. This product prevents and control excess algae or an algae bloom at water gardens or ponds. acts as a highly efficient probiotic that competes with a wide range of aquatic pathogenic and diseases. This process releases a scent which diminishes the perception of other existent odours on the area. It's ideal for situations where you wish to quickly neutralize unpleasant odours. This is the most modern process to save lakes and restore them to their natural glory but Million dollar question is that do we have it or do we have the will to have it and implement it?
