KUPWARA, Oct 14: Militants hurled a grenade at an army bunker this afternoon injuring at least three soldiers while causing damage to five vehicles including an armoured army vehicle.
A top police official told Early Times that at least three army soldiers sustained minor splinter injuries after suspected militants hurled a grenade towards the army bunker guarding the office of Town Commander of 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) on Haihama road in this district today in the afternoon.
The police official said that it was a low intensity explosion and the all the injured soldiers are stable. He said that four civilian vehicles and an army armoured vehicle suffered minor damages. The official said that shortly after the grenade attack the army, police and SOG cordoned off the area around the bunker and launched a search operation to nab the suspected militants.
Reports said that windowpanes of several vehicles and nearby houses were damaged due to the explosion, after which the whole area was cordoned off by the security forces to nab the attackers. Meanwhile, it has been learnt from sources that Tehreek-ul Mujahideen has claimed the responsibility of the attack. The Tehreek spokesman said at least four Indian army men were killed and the Town Commander was wounded in the attack.
The spokesman said that some army vehicles caught fire and the army pressed choppers into service to lift the seriously injured soldiers to the hospital. The outfit also claimed that its squad also attacked a CRPF party near Habba Kadal in old Srinagar city during the intervening night of October 12 and 13.
