‘Market Intervention Scheme’ evokes poor response | 140 metric tons procured so far | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report
Anantnag, Nov 1: Much hyped ‘Market Intervention Scheme ‘of Horticulture department implemented last month for procuring ‘C’ grade fruit from the growers is receiving poor response in this southern district. Reports said that the centers at many places in the district established for the procuring the ‘C’ grade fruit are receiving poor response mostly in concerned Minister’s constituency-Bijbehara. “Counters established in Marhama, Wapzan, Waghama and others areas are witnessing low rush as the area has good quality of fruit,” an official told Early Times. He said that due delay in implementing the scheme, growers preferred to sell the ‘C’grade fruit in open market which has hit the overall prices and destabilized the market. The official said that government’s intentional one month delay in implementing the scheme has affected the growers at large and poor in particular. “Had government implemented the scheme well in time the department would have managed to save Kashmir fruit industry which has earned a bad name,” he said, adding fruit market was flooded this year again the ‘C’ grade fruit due to which the prices of Kashmiri apples touch all-time low. Area marketing officer Anantnag, Mir Shakeel Ahmad confirmed to Early Times that the scheme is receiving poor response at few places. “At few centers we are receiving poor response but in the areas like Khiram and Sallar we are procuring one truck load ‘C’ grade fruit on daily basis,” he said. Mir Shakeel said that the marketing department has so far procured 140 metric tons of ‘C’ grade fruit and with this figure Anantnag is leading as compared to other districts. “Poor response is due to delay in implementation of the scheme,” he said, adding had the department not waste a month the procuring figure would have been double. He said that the government has released the procuring budget to the district and the money will sent to growers in their bank accounts in a transparent manner. Pertinently, on 20th of last month, Government announced the implementation of the ‘Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) to ensure the exportation of high quality fruit in the market. Under the scheme government is procuring C-grade apples from the growers for processing purposes.
