Every PDP legislator to fetch 2000 persons | ‘Nov 7 rally to be bigger than Atal's 2003 gathering’ | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 1: The ruling Peoples Democratic Party has pledged to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled rally here on November 7, a huge success- bigger than his predecessor Atal Bihari Vajpayee's speech of 2003 which also was hosted by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. To achieve the goal, this time, the PDP has directed each of its legislators to ensure getting at least 2000 people to the speech venue while the party President Mehbooba Mufti is personally monitoring the arrangements on minute-by-minute basis. Highly placed sources said party has passed a verbal whip to its leaders, including all the 25 MLAs and MLCs to ensure brining along the crowds to the SK Cricket Stadium at Sonawar here, the event venue. "Basically, the middle rung leadership has been asked to get 500 persons each. This number adds up to 2000 to the level an MLA," explained an insider. The party eyes to keep around five thousand vehicles mostly Tata Sumo cabs available at the disposal of its workers to ferry people from every nook and corner of Kashmir to the venue. Insiders said the party leadership wants the number of people present at the venue to any how cross 50,000 mark. "This is because in 2003, when Vajpayee Ji addressed a similar rally at the same venue, the number of people was estimated at 30,000. This time when the PDP is in power again, the party wants to get another historic gathering double the previous number," said a senior party leader. Some PDP leaders are understood to have recently held a closed door meeting, where it was resolved that the gathering has to be mammoth. Sources said PDP leaders like Altaf Bukhari and Khurshid Aalam, both of whom have been representing Srinagar, are optimistic of getting 5,000 persons each through their "personal connections". But one of the PDP ministers, who is also new to politics, had suggested that "given the public sentiment, not all the leaders can bring so big crowds and that the best would be to ask five-ten battalions of police to attend the speech in civvies and to make government servants of some departments like Education and SMC to ensure their presence at the venue." But the PDP wants to keep no scope for excuses. "The party cadres will have to make Modi's rally a success. It's a do or die situation for us," said a senior party leader. Amid eight months of ups and downs in the coalition, the PDP looks at Modi's rally in Kashmir, wherein he will announce a mega development package, as a historic opportunity for the party to bounce back with success. Modi is expected to announce a major Rs 90,000 package for the development of the state. The coalition ally BJP has been saying it too was busy with the arrangements for the Prime Minister's visit. |
