'J&K can't be termed a Muslim-majority State
NC's tirade against CM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 6: The out-of-power NC continues to indulge in communal politics to weaken the position of the PDP and Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed in Kashmir Valley, once considered its strong hold. Its leadership has turned so rabid that it has started saying day in and day out that the Chief Minister represents only himself and not the people of the State, especially Kashmiri Muslims. Besides, it has been claiming that it alone represents the view of the majority community and that J&K is a Muslim-majority State. "Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed's praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi was his personal voice and not the opinion of Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir," it says.
Chief Minister Mufti has been invariably praising the Prime Minister. Last week, he hailed the Prime Minister as not communal and took on the critics of the Prime Minister who say the country under him has turned intolerant. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's approach is all inclusive," he had said, opined that the Prime Minister was also a man with a vision.
One can understand reasons behind the NC's pain. It wanted an alliance with the PDP to keep the BJP out of power, but the PDP patron turned down its offer of "unconditional support". He had also rejected the Congress' offer of support or the idea of grand alliance between the PDP, the NC and the Congress - idea that was mooted by Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to keep the BJP out of power. Instead, the Mufti forged an alliance with the PDP, saying the people of Kashmir had voted for the PDP and those in Jammu for the BJP and it would be dangerous for the unity of the State if the BJP was kept out of the Government. Both the PDP and the BJP+ had won an equal number of seats in Kashmir Valley and Jammu province - 25 each.
The NC says that the Chief Minister represents only himself and not the people of the State. Its whole approach is flawed. The NC, which got only 11 per cent votes in the Lok Sabha elections and nearly 20 per cent in the Assembly elections, cannot afford to use the language it has been using after suffering massive defeats. As an opposition party, it has the right to criticize, but not the way it has been doing. It has been simply taking recourse to rabble-rousing and communal politics, which is not going to help it.
However, what is most objectionable is its stand that Jammu & Kashmir is a Muslim-majority State. Yes, the Muslims are more as compared to the non-Muslims, but the difference is not that big. The Muslims constitute nearly 60 per cent of the State's population and the non-Muslim no less than 40 per cent. The 40 per cent population cannot be termed as a minority. Hold free and fair census in the State and one will find that the two populations are evenly balanced in the State. The only difference is that the Valley is predominantly Muslims.
The NC leadership needs to become responsible and stop saying that Jammu & Kashmir is a Muslim-majority State. It will be in its own interest. It should remember that it was because of its negative politics that it lost its face in the Valley and became virtually non-existent in Jammu and Ladakh.
