Jammu longs for comprehensive political, financial package | PM Modi's State visit | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 6: The scheduled visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the State on Saturday has raised the expectations of the people. In Kashmir, the people, especially the flood-affected, and the business community want the Prime Minister to announce a hefty financial package, notwithstanding their controversial stand on the State vis-a-vis India. The Mufti Government would also want the Prime Minister to help it financially to meet its financial needs. There are reports that the PM may announce a Rs one lakh crore package. It is very hopeful. The Mufti Government will be pleased if the Prime Minister also announces some "political concessions". Chief Minister Mufti had during the past few days said that the Prime Minister's visit will be a turning point in the history of the State and it will change the destiny of the people of J&K. In Jammu, the people want the Prime Minister to announce political package that meets the age-old demands of refugees from Pakistan, PoJK, the border migrants of 1965 and 1975, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, including Gujjars, Bakerwals, Gaddis and Sippis, and Other Backward Classes. The Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also looking forwards an announcement that helps the business community and those engaged in industry surmount the problems they have been facing since long owing to Government's apathy or negative attitude. The people of Jammu also want the Prime Minister to announce AIIMS for Jammu and declare Jammu city as Model City. They, in addition, want the Prime Minister to announce a political package that meets the age-old demand of the people of Jammu province seeking a political instrument invested with legislative, executive and financial powers. They want a dispensation that enables them to manage their own affairs themselves in a meaningful manner. The other demands of the people of Jammu include a financial package for the flood-affected people. Jammu had also suffered huge losses during the last year's devastating floods. Appointment of a delimitation commission is yet another demand of the people of Jammu province. They said, and rightly, that their fate would remain unchanged unless they get proper representation in the Assembly. As far as Ladakh is concerned, its leadership wants UT status for their region. A report from Leh suggested that all the 18 newly-elected Councilors will meet the Prime Minister to seek his blessings and during their meeting with the Prime Minister, they might rake up the UT issue. The BJP contested the Council elections in Leh on the UT slogan. It is only natural that they want the Prime Minister to use his good offices to help the Ladakhis to achieve their long-cherished goal. Expectations are many and these vary from region to region. Let's see what is in store for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. |
