Utilization of funds for tourism promotion: J&K among worst performers | | | Akshay Azad ET Report JAMMU, Dec 3: Notwithstanding the fact that J&K has huge tourism potential, slackness on part of executive agencies is responsible for inability to tap that potential. It is substantiated by the meager utilization of funds, sanctioned by Union Government for tourism projects in the State. As per the recent data released by the Union Ministry of Tourism (MOT), it has come to fore that Union Ministry provided Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to State Governments for various tourism projects and for the financial year 2013-14, the Union Ministry of Tourism had sanctioned a total of Rs. 7618.54 lakh for the completion of 15 tourism projects out of which State Government succeed to utilize only Rs. 263.65 lakh. The utilized amount accounts for only 3.4 percent of the sanctioned amount and the floppy utilization of funds also affects completion of projects as only two projects out of 15 were completed in the same year. Moreover, for the ongoing financial year 2014-15, a total of Rs. 732.50 lakh was sanctioned by Union Ministry of Tourism for two projects but Jammu and Kashmir Government failed to utilize even a single penny so far. Sources informed Early Times that it was still unclear why so far not a single penny has been utilized by the State Government. "The release of Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to State Governments is subjected to liquidation of pending utilization certificates against the funds released earlier and adherence to the relevant scheme guidelines", sources said. They further said that the latest data is indicating at the fact that the tall claims of Tourism promotion by previous Government remained restricted to oral speeches of Ministers but on ground, result was zero. |
